Just installed the detachable backrest on my 02 Road King Classic (just the backrest kit, not the luggage or tour pack kit). I noticed that with the backrest on, the leather side bag lids don't open fully because the side braces for the backrest are in the way. Is this just something I get used to or did I do something wrong (i..e. I did mount it myself so anything's possible).

you mounted them corectly, I have the same problem on my RK Custom, dealer installed the rack, you just have to push the top of the bag in a little to clear the latch, they are pliable so its really not a problem. The only thing I have noticed is that the latch will leave a wear mark on the top od the bags. I put a self stick black felt pad where it contacts the bag and it works fine.

Leather Sidebag lids

I had a 99 RK Classic, I put on the detachable backrest and luggage rack. I had the same problem. I made (4) 1/2" spacers, got (4) 1/2" longer bolts. 2 for each side. I took off the sidebag mounts , put the spacers in between the mounts and the side rails, inserted the longer bolts. This moved the bags out enough that I could open the lids with out marking them up. (Which will happen eventually)......I later traided a friend for his hardbags and had them painted to match my bike.....Later....Butch
