New Street Glide: What to expect

833 Views 7 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Ralston
Just pulled the trigger today on a new street glide.
:wootdnc:
Now I come from a Fat Boy background I had 2...what can I expect?

Dealer tells me the SG will out-handle a Fatty any day...true?

I'm pretty stoked NEVER thought I'd find myself on a tourer but it just caught my eye yesterday.

I'm going to let the dealer touch the bike...I can handle all the wrenching involved with a Stage 1, the dealer was upfront about them having trouble with the flash so I'll either to PC or fuelpack.

Any other insight or reccomendations for 1st time tourer owner would be great!

Thanks!

My Street Glide is my first Harley so I can not compare it to other models and you probably know a lot more about Harleys then I do. I love every minute I'm on it and if it wasn't for the cold weather I would be on it everyday. It's a great riding bike. But I did have a couple of issues. The first you probably will not have to deal with. That's the fairing mounted mirrors being mounted incorrectly. There was a recall to resolve that problem and I'm sure your bike is not one of them. A lot of people including myself have a problem with very loud squealing front brakes. I replaced my brake pads with Lyndall Z-Pads+ brake pads. Several people including myself have a problem with the new Harmon/Kardon CD player skipping. I had my system replaced with a refurbished unit that is working fine. I had Stage 1 upgrade which included a reflash and SE 1-piece pipes. After Stage 1 my bike ran pretty rough with a lot of backfiring and decel popping. That's probably because of the flash problem your dealer was talking about. I installed a PCIII that took care of that problem. I also changed to Progressive shocks because the short air shocks were a little too rough on my back. Everything is fine now. In a few days I will be getting rid of the SE pipes and installing V & H ovals and V & H true dual headers. I'm sure you will love your Street Glide.

Yes, it will in a hearbeat...my Ultra puts my Heritage to shame:yes: with regards to handling.
You'll feel a little wierd at first since you sit "up" on the bike a bit more than on a Fatboy. Depending on your riding position and how long your legs are, I'd invest in a set of hwy pegs and adjustable brackets on delivery as well; just helps you get more comfy IMO. I have mine set pretty low on the engine guards so the pegs are about even with the floor boards allowing me to stretch out a bit (this is on an Ultra).

And yes, once you get comfortable on the bike you will find it will run rings around a Softail! Another good reason the bike cops use them!

You will also get spoiled quickly by the fairing and radio!

Enjoy!

Ok Then

Good stuff, thanks!

Now then exhaust...looks not withstanding what pipe is going to perform best a 2 into 1.

I had big radius on the Fatty and it was bad-ass!

Congratulations! SG has great styling and handling. For comfort I have a Sundowner seat, riders backrest, Kuryakyn cruiseboards and brake pedal. Put on air kit, pipes and PCIII with custom dyno mapping and am very satisfied with performance. The fairing, stereo and gauges are excellent. SG's ROCK!!

Put 8 pounds in the rear shocks and smooth out the ride!
