Shoot, I guess I misunderstood you. I didn't realize you had enough money to go out and pay cash for a new Harley -- since that's the case, I would say go for it, buy it now.
It's good to hear you're so well off at a young age. Good Luck!

did you ever sit on a softail springer?? long wheelbase & extended forward controls make mine very comfortable & stretched out feeling! i too ride a mountain bike as well as competing in observed trials & feel that off road riding will definitely make you a better rider on the street--teaches you a lot about traction & how to maintain control under adverse, changing conditions---just remember, trees don't turn left in front of you!!! good luck & ride safe!!

PREZ,
I'm not real tall 6'1", but my sporty was way too small for me. My knees were always fighting my elbows for real estate. Even with forward controls, I still was not stretching out. The power will satisfy for a while around town, until your first long run. It sounds like you already are interested in a Super Glide, don't let anything hold you back. Insurance might be an obstacle at your age. Just roll with it. There are worse things in life, ie. <stuck in a cage in rush hour, 105 degree weather, no AC, and your Latte is leftover from this morning.>. Ride Safe:)

prez1967,
I agree with fwilliamsiii -- riding off road will help. That's how I started out when I was a kid. You learn a lot of different skills that may be applied to the road. By the time I was old enough to start going through motorcycle riding courses it was a piece of cake. I remember taking safety courses that taught balance & control with both feet on the pegs at all times, at slow speeds, while maneuvering over and through obstacles. Learning to use the clutch, throttle and brakes all together make you an excellent rider in tight spots.
Let us know when you make your final decision, OK?

Don't let the insurance make your decision. Other posts pretty much cover the options. Fact is you're young and an inexperienced rider so just be ready to pay. I'm 36, have been riding on and off since 16. I have progressive on an 01 RC and it's just over $600/yr mainly because my neighborhood is known for heavy traffic congestion. Two counties away from metro ATL and I would see a 50% drop in both insurance and taxes but I don't want to live there so I just pay.

I started on a Harley but it was no big twin :) a 72 Sprint 350. Since I only had $200 in it, I had liability insurance only. Shop around and make your decision based on the right things... like a year from now wishing you had not cut corners :D
