i would take the lever back off and test it with your finger. If it works great reinstal carefully(use the carboard trick) if not then off to H-d for a new switch. cheap and not that hard to replace. Let us know if there is a problem if you have to change the switch out..
Likely your lever is too far away making the switch open. Thats why they say to put a spacer in there when you take the switch housing off. When you put it back together, and pull the cardboard out, it presses the switch opening the contact, breaking the circuit.
You'll have to loosen the housing screws after you put the cardboard in, and readjust. Dont get too much of a spacer, I use standard cardboard boxes.
