Need SEPST smart tune help

Loaded a new map into a used 2010 Ultra. Bike runs a lot better. Not nearly as much decel popping but...

Want to do a smart tune to tweak it but the on line help and training course are vague on the process.

From what I can figure out:

Reload the map set it for smart tune and unload fuel memory
Leave the VCI hooked up
Turn bike off disconnect PC
Start the bike, push the button on the VCI.??
Go for the road run and ?
How do you download the data from the VCI after it collects its 15 minutes of info?

Reload the map and check both smart tune and reset fuel boxes
Turn bike off for 10 sec. And back on.
Go to the toolbox view and wait until the bike reconnects and the icons on the left become available
click the vci icon (2. From top)
Activate data collection
Disconnect pc
Verify that vci light is on
Press the vci button and verify that the light starts blinking
Ride as instructed in the manual holding throttle stable o. Various positions and gears about 10-15 secs.
Important! Do not turn off the bike when returned, just kill engine with kill switch and return switch to run.
verify the vci light still blinks slowly (fast means you rode too long, vci holds about 30 minutes or a bit more).
Press button and verify light stops blinking
Connect pc and program automatically goes to downloading the log.
Remember to load the map again without smart tune checked
Go to tuning fork and load the log file to the smart tune of ve tables

Was rereading your post jty. Sounds like you're saying reload the map after each data run and before the map is modified and flashed ingot he bike.

That right? Seems a little odd but ....

Thanks jty. Big big help. They need to refine their instructions. Can't find anywhere what you listed.

Question: After disconnecting the pc does the vic button have to be pushed right away? I'd like to start data recording on a piece of road that's about 10-12 minutes from here.

Outstanding! Thank you.

Guess the MoCo figured the training DVD would substitute for a manual. It doesn't. Better fit as a companion to it.

Appreciate it 1Canuck.

Thanks, jty. I'll give it a read.

Just glancing through it, it looks a lot more in depth than the MoCo manual. Both have their place though.

Pretty pleased (but not satisfied) with the limited results I got just uploading a better off the shelf MAP.

Whoever "tuned" it before had a Map in the bike for a 2009 Road Glide with more displacement. No wonder it was decel popping.

What I wouldn't give to have a dyno. I'd be a tweakin fool!

Did two of the three runs I had planned. The second one ended in the worst rainstorm I have ever ridden in (40% chance of percipitation my ass).

Tried to vary the throttle as the directions say. But still have a lot of blank addresses in the adjusted map. Does ST only modify the cells that it thinks need changed?

the software requires that a cell is not only recorded, but that a certain minimum number of times. This is so it can use an averaging of data and not just a one time event.
holding throttle steady over various rpm and then roll on wot multiple times provides many hits in a lot of cells.
It is more important to get the data in the cells that you ride in than all of the table in areas you may never use.

That being the case, looks like this is almost an impossible task. I will never reach red line or anything close to in sixth gear or even fifth. So those cells will never see data.

What's the alternative? Cut and paste the new ST cells to the old MAP?

Maybe it's the learning curve, but this is getting to be a major PITA.

The rest I suppose I could do enough recorded rides to populate the lower end cells eventually, but what a PITA. Or am I missing something?
if you never or seldom hit some cells, then it really does not matter if it is tuned to perfection in unused cells. as long as the areas where you use are tuned you have tuned 100% of what needs to be done. The top right and bottom left area of cells may never be used for instance

Alright! Used the data from the two rides yesterday even though they weren't textbook, I thought I'd give it shot. Revised the map and uploaded it.

Ohhhhh Momma. Mikey like. Not perfect but very much better. Still not silky smooth at some lower rpm's, and still have a little decel popping but a tremendous improvement overall. Very happy

Looking at this project as a work in progress for a while. Get more data and refine the map.

Thanks a lot to both you guys. You saved me endless headaches. If you're ever in SE Florida I'll buy ya a beer or 12.

On a final note...what happened yesterday was a testimonial to HD quality and design.

I got caught in a veritable downpour with no shelter or relief in sight. I've been in rain but this took the cake. Bad.

My biggest concern, other than getting slammed from behind or tee-boned was the VCI getting water in it and shorting out the ECM.

Made it home. Got dry clothes on and tended to the bike. Pulled the VCI off, unplugged it , took it inside. Removed the cable and turned it on end.

Water poured out of the thing. Had to be a shot glass worth or better. Thought for sure I was screwed. Hoping for the best, I blew compressed air in it as best I could and left it in the sun today to dry out this morning.

Hooked it up this afternoon. Said three prayers. Bingo! connected and reprogrammed the ECM without a hitch.

I know there had to be a good degree of luck in this little adventure but still....
