I thought you might be interested to know what bikes we can actually provide electronic cruise control for - and why, so here is a bit of tech background:

HD Softails - our electric servo mounts on the left frame rail running down from the steering head - there is simply nowhere out of sight to mount it. The computer mounts under the steering head. On all bikes equipped with the factory cruise control lever, these two items plus the cruise switch are the key hardware items in the MCCruise kit - here is our brochure to show you what it looks like.

The last issue is the wiring harness: post 2005 Softails come with either an ECM or both and ECM & a BCM. The cruise control harness required for each is different, so this must be specified during ordering the kit. MCCruise only connects to the bike in five places electrically: 12 volt switched power is sourced from the brakes; brake detection comes from the rear brake light switch on bikes with ECM only & from the rear brake light switch and the brake light circuit on bikes with ECM & BCM; Tach signal and speed come from the ECM; ground must attach to the battery as it is the most 'buffered' point on the bike to protect against high voltage spikes - and bikes are electrically noisy! We do not connect to clutch because our Tach monitoring is now so sensitive that it is better at monitoring the clutch being pulled in than most clutch switches (Clutch switches often do not trigger until long after the clutch is slipping.)

We cross-reference road speed with Tach signal and monitor rate of change of engine RPM and shut the cruise down if pre-set criteria are exceeded.)

HD Sportsters - We have now had access to a 1200 Sportster, but could not fit a kit as it was a brand new bike from a dealer so it couldn’t be ridden or modified. We are trying to source a couple of connectors to make MCCruise easier to fit. We need access to another bike to finalise a kit and test it. Sportsters do not have factory cruise control levers on their throttle bodies, so we have to use our cable interface unit solution on those bikes – and V-Rods if we can ever get a bike for development. We have done an 883 Sportster and the customer is delighted with it. We are struggling to bring these kits to market because we are so busy – eight new bikes and ATVs lined up - all done, except for the instructions!

HD Tourers – In Australia, Tourers only come with factory cruise control, but I believe there are many bikes in the USA without cruise. We can do them – for example we have done a 1999 Road King with our new computer and electric servo. The beauty of these kits is that the cruise control parts can be hidden under the right hand side, side cover in many instances.

HD without factory cruise control levers on the throttle body or carburettor – our ‘universal' kits can be fitted to almost any bike by a capable mechanic. We don’t suggest dealers do them however because doing it right takes time and the labour cost can blow out. That said, many of the older Harleys have much easier electrical connections than late models and our kits can certainly be made to work pretty easily on them. Our vacuum servo Softail kit showed us how to do the throttle cable connection with a cable interface unit and this can combine readily with our new electric servo and new computer.
