Well I decided to do the heads and gear cam over the 6 speed tranny.

I ordered a set of AMS heads from this place: http://www.automotivemachine.com/, and a set of Andrews TW26 Gear Drive cams. I will be replacing my .203 cams, and OEM heads, and installing cometic gaskets. Of course all stock bolts and washers will be swapped out for chrome.

The impetus behind all of this was to get rid of the knock that came in hot weather and when the heads got heat soaked. Tom and Steve at AMS said this package will do the trick. The AMS heads breathe and flow better, and the coated exhaust ports help keep the head temps down. The cam will keep my torque where I want it, and the Cometic gasket will help lower my compression just a bit. Steve said a combination of high compression caused by too thin of a headgsket, poor flowing OEM heads that retained heat, and the use of .203 cams all contributed to the ping.

So tomorrow Jimmie from Harley House Calls, an experienced independant factory trained mobile mechanic, is coming over to do the install. Jimmie does good work, and folks over at the Electra Glide Garage on the Delphi forums all say the AMS heads are excellent.

I guess a good head job is.....well.... like a good head job. Everyone knows someone they really like, and all the providers have different methods and techniques. But if you're satisfied in the end, and happy with the results, that's all that matters.
