What carb is on it? How many miles? What other changes have been done? Could your dealer have meant chain slap from the CAM chains? Is it a knock/thunk or a clack/tap? Hold your engine up to the computer and let the rest of us hear the noise!! (Just kidding!!)

I'd guess oil not getting to the top end. Can you determine where in the motor the noise is coming from?

My 01' Flht Has A Knock At Low Rpm Idle When It's Cold...dealer Says It's Chain Slap...put On New Auto Chain Tensioner And It Didn't Help...can't Pinpoint Where It's Coming From....keep It Above 1100 Rpm And You Can't Here It....any Ideas
it' hard to say...I can put a ear to it and can't pinpoint it ...not in the topend ...doesn't sound like it's in the primary but I can here something at the top of the transmision...also when I kill the engine I can here a knock when it dies
35,000 mi....Stock carb...stage one...sounds like a chevy 350 rear main going out...put a ear to it and it sounds like it's at the top of the trany but it' hard to tell...will the cam chains knock if the tensioners are bad? Dealer said primary chain slap but that was when it was under warranty... If I take it back now it's probably major rebuild time
I'd take a hard look at the compensator nut or maybe even the compensator spring cup.

Yes, I think Ed's hit it.

I agree on the compensator nut. When mine came loose it sounded like the bearings in the bottom end were gone. And it was much worse at lower RPM.

The other thing that makes me think so (compensator nut) is the knock when it shuts down.

I'm going to check it out today and I'll let you know what I find ...It sounds like you are probably right
My compensator sprocket came loose and it was the worst knocking noise. Sounded like a bad rod bearing. The noise was much louder when the engine was cold than warm.
