Smokey, I took the MSF class last weekend and they taught us to leave the right foot on the brake and put the left foot down. A main reason is so that your brake light is still on. After you're safely stopped there doesn't seam to be any reason why you cannot put both feet on the ground. Taking off with both feet on the ground actually seams a little easier (for a newbie) because you will have a little more balance
