From the book of the Law of Unintended Consequences

A renewable energy source designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is contributing more to global warming than fossil fuels, a study suggests.

Measurements of emissions from the burning of biofuels derived from rapeseed and maize have been found to produce more greenhouse gas emissions than they save.

Other biofuels, especially those likely to see greater use over the next decade, performed better than fossil fuels but the study raises serious questions about some of the most commonly produced varieties.

Rapeseed and maize biodiesels were calculated to produce up to 70 per cent and 50 per cent more greenhouse gases respectively than fossil fuels. The concerns were raised over the levels of emissions of nitrous oxide, which is 296 times more powerful as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Scientists found that the use of biofuels released twice as much as nitrous oxide as previously realised. The research team found that 3 to 5 per cent of the nitrogen in fertiliser was converted and emitted. In contrast, the figure used by the International Panel on Climate Change, which assesses the extent and impact of man-made global warming, was 2 per cent.

Reminds me of an article I read not too long ago that discussed how the ethanol craze was hurting farmers who raise live stock and rely on corn to feed them.

try this

Someday in the future,

enviormental whackos will say 'Too much sexual activity produces more

exhalations by humans. The heavy breathing results, c02 emiissions up

33% over celibate life style of Tibetan Monks.'

Al Goracle is making an initial offering of sexual carbon credits for

those who follow the lifestyle of Bill Clinton.

Hey reality is stranger than fiction:yes:

my 12 yr old 6 cylander Saab gets 25-30 mpg. The new Saabs get 17 mpg (or less). Why? Because of the anti-pollution devices required on cars. I bet the pollution from my tank is the same amount as from the new tanks and the new ones eat up more non-renewable resources.

It would not suprise me at all if it takes more energy (fuel or btuh's) to produce a gallon of ethanol(squeezings) than is actually realized from this bio fuel, which is somehwere around 80,000 btuh I think compared to gasoline at 119,000 btu.
So where's the benefit?
Further distillation and purification can raise the btu content of ethanol but how much does that cost?
There must be some real smart folks up at EPA:wacko:

I don't know about your side of town, but where I am the fields this years have gone from the usual miles of corn stalks to the yellowing green leaves of soybeans. Expect a major jump in the cost of your wheaties next spring. (have you seen the price of milk lately?!)

I have 2 "cuzins" that farm 2700 acres in north Texas. They dropped their corn planting and went to all soybeans. Said they expected a shortage in beans because too many folks were growing corn. Growing season here still allows them to plant winter wheat, get the harvest and then plant beans.
So far it looks good for soybean prices to be up as the US harvest will be smaller than last year.

BTW, I went to Ennis TX NHRA finals yesterday and those top Alcohol motor fumes smell just like roasting ears in a fire pit.

Harleys and Buells kilt them rice burner Suzukis in pro-stock motorcycles.
Got autographs from Andrew Hines, Angelle, Eddie Krawiec and Chip Ellis.
Peggy Llewellyn's Buell beat Andrew's V-rod on a hole shot but the v-rod damn near caught her. Another 30ft it would have. Peggy by .017 secs.
