Man charged with DUI manslaughter

TALLAHASSEE

A Tallahassee man was killed Friday night when a motorist authorities say was driving under the influence crashed into a motorcycle. The crash occurred just before 9 p.m. on U.S. Highway 27 about five miles north of Tallahassee, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Michael Hawkins, 24, of Havana, was southbound in a 1988 Toyota sedan when he attempted to turn left into a parking lot. Hawkins missed the parking lot and ended up in the northbound lane, where he crashed into a 1995 Harley-Davidson driven by Ronald A. McGlamory, 46. McGlamory, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle and later pronounced dead. Hawkins, who sustained minor injuries, was held without bail on a DUI manslaughter charge at the Leon County Jail.

That's horrible. Reading stories like this ALMOST makes me not want to start riding. Horrible way to go. I hope the SOB gets whats coming to him! I tell you I'm not perfect, but drinking and driving is stupid. No one wins! I hope he is plaqued with the accident until his dying day!! J.T.

yes right here in my town this weekend a motorcyclist was killed in a head on collision with another motorcyclist right in town he was only 24 years old. the other motorcylclist was charged with a dwi. they also said that the headlight on the motorcyle the guy that was killed on wasnt on.

Joe, Back when I got Easy Riders they would have articles like this. One time they had one where a motorcyclist had been going fast, lost control and was flung about 100 feet into a tree. Of course, he was killed. He had no helmet on and the reporting officer said that if he had been wearing a helmet, there was a chance he might have survived.

I don't know about you folks but if I was flying 100 feet through air and hit a tree, I really don't think a helmet would have made much difference. He might have survived but I believe he might have been a vegetable the rest of his life.

Sad story indeed. Seems like everytime I read one of these, the Press just has to comment if the guy had no helmet.

Now had he been wearing one, and still died, there would have been no mention whatsoever about the head gear.

Actually I later heard that the cops commented that a helmet wouldn't have helped. It would have broken his neck anyway.

Before I begin a response, let me say, I don't wear a helmet most of the time. Depends on where I'm riding. I think we will all agree that wearing a helmet will drastically reduce chances of a head injury. Granted, there are cases where a helmet and even full body armor won't help. The problem I see with most of us, is having helmet laws jammed down our throats. Yes? Texas has a lax helmet law. $10,000.00 worth of medical insurance required. It is unfortunate that the press dwells on the fact that an injured or dead bike rider wasn't wearing a helmet, but that's the press for you. I've never crashed a street bike but have many many crashes in the dirt. No head injuries yet, thankfully. How many football players have you seen playing without a helmet? Helmets work, folks. However, I agree it should be a personal choice.

Yeah but, Football players make their living crashing heads together on PURPOSE!

Locally, a HD enthusiast and serviceman was killed Sunday during a 400 bike run for Lady Bikers Ride for Breast Cancer. He was hit by a lawyer in a cage who ran a red light!My gut feeling is he got tired of waiting for the line to pass and jumped the gun but I'm not absolutely positive. The guy was in his ealry 50's, worked as an auto repairman as well as at the local HD shop.

Dave 51, You're right on. I live in California which does have a Helmet law, AlthoughI would use one anyway it pisses me off its not MY choice.

My point was that we don't go banging our helmeted/helmetless heads on the ground on purpose. Football players USE theirs as weapons to take down their opponent! Chances of an injury to them is far greater!

Ride like you are invisible and don't believe that helmet will save you, avoiding accidents will. If you want to wear one its your choice, I drive in Boston traffic every day, nobody uses directionals, if they do they are probably going the other way. They run stop signs and red lights amongst many other idiotic driving manuvers. I drive 20-25,000 miles a year and most of it in boston traffic and I avoid an accident a day. If you follow at a safe distance they pull in front of you, even if there is only one car length. Look all around , check your mirrors constantly, I even practice skidding with the front tire(not in traffic) although that practice has paid off in traffic. All I am saying and I know we can't avoid them all is avoiding accidents is better than a helmet anyday.

Football is a bad analogy - they have a helmet law also, no choice there. And using the helmet to take down the opponent is a 15 yard penalty and will be reviewed by the league office for possible fines and suspension
