Installation of LED fuel gauge.

I'm 3/4 done installing the LED fuel gauge on my 2005 Road King Classic. I'm to the point where it tells me to thread the grey wire through the tunnel and then up the front of the tank to the speedometer cable. Two questions? One, what is the tunnel? Two , does the wire stay on the outside of the front of the tank?
