I have the following to install this weekend:

· V&H Longshots
· 15” Apes
· Chrome Handlebar Controls
· Chrome Grips
· Braided cables and brake line
· White Brothers lowering kit

Bike should have a different look and sound by the time Monday comes.
I’ll post a picture ASAP.
Wish me luck!

Damn dude!! Sounds like fun to me.
Sounds like you may be splicing some wires too. You running the wires inside the bars or outside?

Good luck with it.

Ape hangers, ouch my arm hurts (as I rub the scars left over from the shoulder surgery).

Place those wires inside if you can, it's such a "tough" look ;)

I am puttin' a 1" handlebar on so there is not a lot of space inside.I see what can be done with drilling the bar. I wil then need to find suitable grommets.
I don't particularily like the look of a fat handlebar.
Also I will try to relocate the turn signals at the sides of the top plate of the triple tree where the pinch bolts are. That should look cool too.

I'll give you guys something to laugh about.
Let's say my planning has been less then meticulous.

New Handlebar:
Took the old one off, removed all the controls, removed the tank to access and remove the cables, put wiring extensions by splicing and soldering, put the new chrome controls on and......I have no damn grips! The left handside grip is glued to the old bar. A frantic (5.00 pm) drive to the nearest HD shop did not yeld any result. No grips in stock whatsoever for a '02 HD!

New braided clutch cable:
Took the old one off by draining the tranny and removing the cover and gasket only to realise that.........I got no replacement gasket or fluid (it's now well into Saturday night).

New V&H Longshots:
Simple job eh?
Yes but once I took the old exhaust off and was about to put the new one on I realised that the new one goes right in front of the transmission cover and for reasons explained in the previous point there was no use in puttin' the new system on until tranny cover and gasket can be obtained.

New rear end lowering kit:
Contrary to what I had hoped (and in spite of suggestions from fellow forum members) it is now obvious even to me that I will need some kind of shock press or C-clamp to put the kit on.:(

Week-end bottom line:
The bike is a complete mess.
The handlebar is not in place.
The transmission cover is back on but will have to be taken out again when the gasket arrives.
There is no fluid in the transmission.
The old exhaust is off the bike but the new one is not yet on because of the tranny gasket.
The rear end kit is far from installed.
Quite frankly the bike looks like crap and will be out of commission for at least a week.

Worst of all I have to use the train and the tube to go to work, it's raining, it's cold, trains are overcrowded and the tube smells of dead roaches, then I have to deal with complete morons all day and I don't even have the ride back home to look forward to.
Have a nice day!

94c4,

Sorry to here that things didn't go as well as you expected. Got a question though, I (not knowing) was wondering what the difference is between grips for and older bike (90's) and an '02 are?

For the shock tool that you need look here . I think this is what you may need.

Just sounds like you need a few more things and you'll be riding soon.

Good luck,

Jockey,
No difference.
The shop just did not have a single set of grips in stock!
I am now taking monday night off from this project and will be back to work on the bike tomorrow night.

Wyo,
I had three pints and that helped ease the pain and that was this morning before goin' to work.

Ciao

JFSCheck, Jockey,
I would like to follow your advise and run the wires inside the bars.
I need to drill those apes which I am happy to do.
Anything I should keep in mind whilst drilling?
I guess the hole needs to be about half an inch in diameter to be of use.
Will this hole make the handlebar weak?

Can you please shed some light?

Thanks guys.
Ciao

That's one thing I've discovered whenever I try to do any wrenching on my bike. 1) It's alway more complicated than it looks 2) You always have to take more sh(t off than you thought you would 3) You may, or may not have the right tool 4) Either way, it will require more sizes and configurations than you thought (torx, hex head, wrench, socket, phillips, etc.) 5) It will take at least twice as long as by all rights it should 6) you'll be missing someting you need (gasket, oil, tranny fulid, etc.)

If you happen to be ADD like me, it takes longer 'cause you spend half your time looking for a tool or part that you laid down somewhere else. I can cut quite a path between the toolbox, workbench & bike when I'm trying to work on it.

All that said, it does give you a feeling of satisfaction (and more $ in your pocket) when all is said and done. Just don't get too frustrated.
