Lets suppose for a moment that H/D never built the V-Rod. I know, what a void there would be in the cycle world! But, lets suppose the V-Rod never happened, what kind of bike would you have purchased instead?

Aprilla, BMW, Buell, Ducatte, other Harley-Davidson, Honda, Indian, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Triumph, Victory, Yamaha, other, or none?

Specify the model if you like.

I traded in my Night Train for the V-Rod, it was very custom with a ton of black. Prior to that I had a Dyna Glide Sport.

I outgrew crotch rockets and actually got back into riding after 10 years mainly because I loved Harleys I saw.

If I were to buy anything else, I really love the BMW designs and would consider that, but theres something about the Harley, as you guys know, that cant be put into words. It is like no other machine.

I went to 3 memorial services in Sept/Oct ’01, one close relative and two close friends. Around that time I decided there was no need to wait any longer to buy my first Harley-Davidson. Life is just too damn short.

I have always lusted after a big bad Hog. My Norton was my first bike in 15 years and the Aprilia came soon after. They are fun bikes with lots of character, especially the Mille, but they are not Harleys...

I walked into my local H-D dealer to buy a Soft Tail Deuce or Fatboy... until I started reading about the next generation Harley. At first, I was like most and didn't accept the Vrod as my concept of what a Harley should be. I devoured everything I could read about this new bike. It took me about 2 weeks to find a local dealer that would guarantee me one at msrp. I finally placed my deposit October 1, 2001. I still wasn't completely sold on the Vrod until I finally got to throw a leg over one at the big Cycle World Bike Show last Nov. I took delivery March 2nd and although I still lust for a big bad Fatboy, I wouldn’t swap my Vrod for any other bike in the world.

I was riding a Yamaha Virago 1100. A good or maybe even great bike even though it wasn't anybody's version of a status bike. It was quick, handled well, low maintainance and it was paid for. I loved it. But then I saw the bike of my dreams and everything changed. This bike has changed the way I ride, my view of motorcycling, the amount of riding I do and provided a bunch of guys to ride with as I was a lone biker before. If it weren't for the V-Rod I'd still be happily riding the Virago but I'm somewhere else now.

I was looking very seriously at a FXDWG, but there was no after thought once the V-Rod did come out; very pleased with my choice.

I must admit I haven't ridden as much as many people here but as soon as I saw the first picture of the V-Rod I knew I had to have one. I admit it was because it looked more like a beautiful painting than a bike and I was awestruck by this fine piece of moveable art. Then I started researching the bike - not only was it a Picasso it was also an engineering marvel. It blended everything pleasing about the materialistic world we live in. Power, beauty, individuality, style and perfection. As I say I haven't ridden a lot of bikes but you know you've ridden a real bike when you've ridden a V-Rod.

My V-Rod story

I was awe struct by the V-Rod after it's first announcement by HD and knew then that I would someday have to have one. But to be honest I had never owned a Harley and having had my initiation into motorcylces during the AMF era I was suspect. I asked others, are todays Harleys more reliable and dependable? Most asured me that yes, there was great improvement. But the experiences of some Sporter owners left me wondering. Some Honda friends asked why I would pay over twice as much for a Harley when I could have a reliable Honda.

Then, I spotted a V-Rod, not on the floor at the local HD dealer but in the used bike section at the Honda dealer! I asked why he had a V-Rod (a 2002 for $23,000!) and he responded that it was a long story but the guy didn't like it and traded it for a new Goldwing. Two things struck me, either there were major problems with this V-Rod, or if he really wanted a Goldwing he shouldn't have bought a V-Rod in the first place. Two completely different machines.

I strongly considered a VTX and a V-Max. The VTX has almost comperable performace to the V-Rod, but has a typical Honda problem, that being that it is, and FEELS, top heavy. The V-Max is a now classic high performance sport cruiser that is I believe in its last year of production in 2003. Both had their advantages and disadvantages

Finnaly, one day last spring during one of my visits to the HD dealer a 2002 V-Rod owner pulled in and I was able to talk to him, examine his ride, and take his V-Rod for a "cruise" around the parking lot. I was sold. That was April. Took delivery of my 2003 silver/black Harley V-Rod in early August. All I can say is that I am completely satsified and made the right choice. To my Honda friends I say: Because the V-Rod is twice the bike! And you know what, it really is.

Almost bought a Road King Classic, wouldn't move on dealer markup, same with the Duece. Paid MSRP for the VROD and that sealed my choice.
It's my 27th bike and 3rd Harley. Had an Excelsior Super X Deadwood Special that road like a dream but no factory left to support it. Sold a 2001 BMW R1200C Phoenix to buy the Rod, I did not like riding that bike, the ABS brakes were cool along with the anti-dive front end but the rest of the bike was a disappointment.
I would buy the Vrod again but it would be a tough choice between it and the Duece if I could have gotten it for retail.

If you're going for looks - I was considering a Ducati 996. Absolute stunning styling and gobs of performance. Essentially a street legal race bike. But the riding position is murder for us old farts.

In a completely different vein, also considered the BMW R1200GS - the assault vehicle of motorcycles. Looks cool as hell and the Adventure model has an 11 gallon tank providing 650 mile range! Great for traversing Africa, should you ever decide to do so. Alas, with it's 33 in seat height, I was unable to get it off the kickstand - being vertically challenged and all.

For the record, my other ride is a 2000 Road King Classic - a must for over the road adventures.

AZVROD,

I know what you mean, any seat height over about 28 inches for me is too high. Which means an ST1300 is probably out of the question.

If the V-Rod had never happened, I'd be riding a 2003 Screaming Eagle Deuce. I love the looks of that bike, but I wouldn't trade my V-Rod for it. If only I could afford to have both....
