I had an oil cooler on my sportster and now one on my FLHTC/I and I’m glad I put them on. The oil temp will get higher than 180. That is the temp the oil has to reach before the thermostat will open allowing oil to flow through the cooler. On my sporty the oil temp would get to 260 w/o the oil cooler. With the cooler it stayed around 200. I'm not sure what the temp is running on my 88 but it has to be cooler.
I live in FL and the summer stop and go traffic is a killer on me, much less the engine. Some say running the oil temp that high is ok, but for my peace of mind I like to have a cooler.
