How to catch used oil from filter

take a anti freeze jug and cut the sides off it,

and make a little rectangular tray to sneak up under the filter.

be SURE to cut the end square so it fits flush under the filter.

take filter loose with tool, take tool off,

slide this under it, take filter off, slide it down the tray,

take rag, get off all oil,

take another rag, push it under the filter area, and pull the tray out.

the filter mount will drip some on the rag while you finish the oil change.

i have been using these for years, and i thought everyone did, till my buddy paid $350 for an 1k service at the dealer, and had oil all over the front of the frame. he could smell it all the way home, I wiped most of it off. but that still chaps you.

cut the bottom off straight.
then make a U shape cut along the side.
leave the cap on.
you now have an oil filter drain pan.

Now that's pretty slick right there. I'd always been using aluminum foil.

I throw it away with the oil filter after each oil change. I guess I'll have to take a photo the next time i change the oil or drink two liters of pop, that's soda in the other states.

When changing my oil I just unscrew the filter and let the oil drip. Spray the rest with brake cleaner. Change out the front motor mount every two years as it is bad in that amount of time anyway.

That's just plain silly.....................
Why not skip changing the oil filter and just replace the motor every two years?????????? Just asking.........
Brake Clean is really hard on the paint and plastic down there. Use Simple Green, it is much more friendly to those surfaces.:sofa:#[email protected]

WTF are you talking about? I ride this thing and am not worried about what a little brake cleaner is doing to my plastic. Change the motor? Dude what are you talking about?

Yeah, I quit trying.

Now I just let it run, then clean up with foaming engine cleaner. I need to get the bugs off anyway.

This anti-freeze jug is the BEST I have ever seen.

Having said that...I have always used the box the new filter comes in to catch and funnel the oil filter oil into the pan underneath. Most of the time I don't get a single drop on the floor...as long as I take my time.

You open the box up completely and tear off the closures and edges (they are perforated kinda) and then make a "channel" and slide it right underneath the filter as far as it will go. Unscrew the filter slowly and adjust accordingly as the oil starts to flow down the channel into the pan. Works GREAT. When done..just throw it away.

All great tips and ideas. Whatever works....I use an empty cereal box. I cut it to fit square up well under the filter flange and leave a tail that sits up between the filter and motor. A small piece of masking tape placed on the box and engine case holds it there. I complete the whole task then when the new filter is in place I remove the cardboard last. No used oil anywhere but in my drain tray. The other reason I like to leave the cardboard in place until the new filter is on is because I fill the new filter with some oil and ocassionally some drips out before I get the new filter started and tightened on.

I gave up as well. Alway end up making a mess one way or the other. Hosing off a little or a lot of oil seems to take about the same time.

I just use a big drain pan under the bike and don't worry where the oil goes. Then I take a rag and wipe down anything the oil touched and screw on the new oil filter. A little used oil that hits some of the frame just helps rust proof it better. Also I use filters that are packed with filter medium and don't hold that much oil to begin with and also has a good anti-drain back valve that keeps most of the oil in the filter. If you have a lot of oil in your filter when you screw it off then you may not have much in the can in the way of filtration media.
