How safe is it to ride without a stage 1 remap?

I have changed the air cleaner and pipes on my '05 super glide custom
to an Arlen Ness big sucker and screaming eagle II slip ones. I cannot
get into the dealership to get a stage 1 download for about 8 days.
They are booked. I know the bike will be running leaner than normal
but I want to ride.......the weather is great. Will it hurt to ride it for
a few days without the download?

put the old aircleaner back on and ride it! Air Cleaner is the main restriction on the whole setup.

I agree. Here is food for thought though. The download that HD does on the bikes I have been told really only does 2 things well. It advances the timming curve, and raises the rev limit for the bike. By law they can't add any fuel to the mix so to speak due to EPA regulations. You know they can't change anything in the fuel map that will add hydro carbons or more pollutents to the air. So go figure about the remap of the computer they do with the stage 1 download. I am using a DFO on mine and haven't had it flashed or anything and outside of popping it runs like a bear. I can't figure for the life of me why everyone thinks they add fuel to the mix when the EPA says they can't. Also beware that the dealer won't inspect of may not pass your bike on inspection when it comes time for that because the basic EPA standard the bike was tuned to has been changed with the add on's.

I ran my Hooker tunable's on my bike for a while before doing anything else to it. Then put the Ness a/c on it and a DFO. I don't know about the HD flash they do. I was at the dealer the other day talking with a mechanic to see why my bike idles so high on start up. Does't matter if it is hot or cold from start. He stated that the flash only raises the rev limiter on the bike and advances the timming on the bike. The fuel it actually adds to the bike is minimal at best. He runs the flash and the DFO on his RK. I do know that my brother in law had it done on his 04 springer and outside of the aforementioned attributes he still says he gets all the popping he got before. He called the dealer and the dealer told him pretty much the same thing, get something on the bike that actually adds fuel to the bike as the flash won't do it alone. Go figure.

Now I'm not saying that the tech is wrong, but I rode my bike for 6000 mile's with a set of SEII's and no download and my bike was running leanner than crap, pipe's were almost white, after the SE air kit and the remap my pipe's have turned to alot darker color and the bike run's like a rapped ape, I am very pleased with the proformance at this time, if another controller will give you more power then that's what I would go with, and like they said, don't run it without a remap of some sort with a ac change. :D

I do not claim that is is correct for anyone else, but I did not require a remap or any other "adjustments". I ran stock for 1.5 years ('01 Road King). Then added Screaming eagle slip ons with tapered end caps for a season. Third, added the screaming eagle stage 1 air cleaner and after 3 dyno runs, fuel/air was spot perfect. Even the Tech and service manager who wanted to sell me more "service" couldn't justify it. This is the second season with my set-up.

My suggestion is to have them dyno it first. Then add what you need. You may require a power comander, then again you may not need anything.

Checked it out today

...did a Stage 1 with Hooker 2-1 tunables today - had before & after dyno runs done. The bone stock AFR ran very steady around 14.8 from 2600 to 5300 (I know - LEAN). After the Stage 1 work with reflash, the AFR was 13.8 to 14 from 3000 to 4700 and fell off gradually to <13 from 5100 to redline. On the other end, it jumped over 15 below 2900 - don't think I understand that, nor do I particularly like it - may be time for a Race Tuner. The service manager advised that the reflash parameters are set for SE pipes (I didn't ask which) which he said were more restrictive than my Hookers. That would explain why I'm still on the lean side except on the high end.

Regardless, there's a pretty significant difference in the before and after AFR's. Also as mentioned above, the limiter kicked in at 6300 after the reflash (several hundred RPM higher than before).

BTW - HP went from 59.1 to 71.7 (pipes are on "Torque" setting so there are probably a couple more horses in there) and torque went from 69.2 to 81.5. ...wouldn't have thought that made much difference in the ride but going through the gears is a trip now - sounds great too. The only questions are:

What's next? and

Where do I stop?
