three months ago I bought my first harley a street bob. i want to do some things to it but after pricing in the parts and labor it seems that the cost to do this might be as much as if i just get the bike i have always loved but out of budget new-that is either a road king or heritage classic

By the sound of your post you want a bike with windshield,bags,and passenger seat/pegs? You can do these upgrades on the cheap if you are resourceful without losing your a**.
