Your best bet is to sell it yourself and then buy one from an individual versus a dealer. You'll save yourself thousands and you can still finance (if needed).

three months ago I bought my first harley a street bob. i want to do some things to it but after pricing in the parts and labor it seems that the cost to do this might be as much as if i just get the bike i have always loved but out of budget new-that is either a road king or heritage classic
i know i'll take a hit but after adding the cost of a used road king/heritage used and the hit I would take on the new bike I might end up financing the same amount.
anyone out there that has found themselves doing this type of
thing?

I dont know seems like you'll take a beating, I maybe wrong.
If you financed the bike you probably cant get what you owe on it. Dont want to be a bummer. Also a street bob is a far cry from a RK?? What were the mods you were looking at doing to the street bob? I cant imagine getting any mods done at the dealer?? There maybe other options to getting the mods done.
Another thought is rates on a new bike are usually better then used??
I would make a list of the pro and cons to each style bike

Consider that if you get a Road King or a Heritage, you are also going to spend money on mods. It is what we do, no matter what bike we buy. So, to me it's all relative.
I don't know Heritages but I ride a Road King. The handlebars have to go or you'll get that pain in your shoulder blades from reaching forward and down all the time. Fifteen minutes in the stock seat and you'll swear your backside has fallen off somewhere. New Mustang seat ~$450. Highway pegs? Rider's backrest? Passenger back rest? Rack for your tour bag?
My point is it sounds like your comparing the cost of your stock Street Bob + mods to a stock FLHR or Heritage without regards to add-ons that you will do to those bikes.
If you can swing it finanicially, I'd say get what you really want. Just be sure you are considering the entire financial picture.

The Heritage is fine for strait road riding, but it is no were near as comfortable as a RK, nor will it handle like a RK.
And with the release of the 2009 model, the 2008 and 2007's have taken a hit in value, there are some sweet deals to be had right now in the tour bike world.

I know that one's mechanical ability (or lack there of) can make a big diff in the amount of mods affordable..Paying retail is another..
I look at bikes like "one size does NOT fit all". Gotta do some mods or fitting to ur needs..
My 97 RK oem seat was a 50 mile only seat..My azz would be aching.. I couldn't even sell it..(back in '97)..
That was replaced w/Corbin & better handlebars & I was getting dialed in size wise..
Get the bike U want.. Not the one that will cause you regrets ...

i have a buddy that done the same thing.he's been itchings for a soft tail classic.well in jan,he bought a bike.when i found out he bought a fricken street bob,i didnt know what to say.well i said thought you wanted a classic.well with the yappin of the loved one,got the bob.4 g's cheaper.and yes,ever since he says "wish i would have got the classic"i tell him to sell the damn thing and pay for something that you realy want.I would hate to be paying for a ride I didnt want.thats just me though.

My Road King Custom I basically turned into a Road King. The reason I sold it was because the front motor mount went bad and I didn't know what it was. Didn't have access to a forum like this.
I also bought the Night Train - but I love that bike how it was.
However, I justified in my head to trade the Road King in on an Ultra, thinking the extras for my Road King was more than I lost on the swap.
Then I got tired of the Tour Pak permanently affixed to the rear of the Ultra and with all the changes to the 09's justified in my head to trade in on the 09 Street Glide.
Looking back - if I had it all over to do again, I'd have bought a fairing for the Road King, fixed the front engine mount and saved myself a ton of money.
Quite honestly - I've wasted a lot of "hard to come by " money.

By the sound of your post you want a bike with windshield,bags,and passenger seat/pegs? If all you want is the windshield, bags, passanger set up I would say stay with what you have. I have a fatboy and everyone told me to buy a heritage. Well after a couple of years I have pretty much a heritage. With that said I searched long and hard for everything that I added and did all installs myself. EBAY and craigslist are great places to find good deals, you just need to know a deal when you see it. Seen a lot of stuff go on ebay for more than it would cost to buy it new. Like said previously not matter what you have you will do mods to it. But in the end it is YOUR money and choice.
After a 10 year hiatus from riding (92 FXR), I purchased a new 1200L as I am older and wanted to ease back into riding with a lighter, smaller bike. I really like the bike and have put 6500 miles on it in 18 months. My confidence is back and I am riding well.
I recently sold it (privately) and now am in the market for a Softail Deluxe as it fits me well and as I get older, a geezer bike is what I desire.

As posted by others above, sell it outright. Don't take a hit with the middle man. It's probably going to be tough right now with the economy but, take your time.
There are lots of used bikes out there that can be had for a song... probably already set up with the mods you want. If you're willing to be patient, you'll get the golden goose. If you're in a hurry, you may have a difficult time walking upright.
Get your financing in order before you need it, if you're going to finance it. It doesn't take that long to do.
The key in your situation is patience. Take your time and get what you need to out of the bike you have and, wait.... it may take a couple of months to find the right one.... you may need to rent a u-haul bike trailer for 15.00/day to go and pick it up. No worries, the deals are out there..... especially right now.

I rented an EG Classic over the weekend. I sometimes regret buying my Fatboy and subsequently dropping lots of $$ into engine upgrades and what not. The bike is just not suited to riding with my son or my wife nearly as well the touring bikes. So as part of celebrating our anniversary we set up with sitters to watch the kids and planned an all day ride on EG. To say the least, it was fantastic, the new 09 Touring bikes are everything I've read.
And then this morning, I hopped back on the Fatboy and went to work. And then I remembered why I got this bike and how much I still love it. This is the primary type of riding I do, all by myself. I have no desire to see the Fatboy out of my garage.
Point being, take your time, go rent bikes you're thinking of buying and maybe those you weren't. You may find you want to just stay with the Street Bob. But if you decide on something else, you'll have made the decision having educated yourself.
