Hi Guys,
I have a 2006 FLHTCUI and attempted to put a new chrome oil fill cover assembly on (not a chrome "wrap"). To make a long story short, I cross-threded the bottom right bolt and it leaked. I took it to the dealer and they retapped and installed it correctly. Ever since then I have noticed a "hot oil" on metal smell at speed. Coincidentally they also performed an oil & filter change. The smell became noticeable shortly after this.

They have checked for leaks and found none, the bike is not using oil and there is no "TellTale" drops under the bike when parked, and no indication of oil on pipes, cylinders or any part of the bike. The regulator in front of the oil filter has been detailed to ensure that no oil was spilled on it during change. The smell is noticeable even at highway speeds. Help please!!!

Something in your last paragraph isn't true. There is oil somewhere. I imagine it'll burn off at some point and the smell will go away. Have you given it a good cleanin' lately?

Did the dealer service include an air filter change? I’d take a look at/inside the air filter assembly to see if you’ve got some excessive oil build up inside and if there might be something amiss with the breather vent routing.

Hote Oil Smell

I have cleaned the bike thoroughly 10 or 12 times. They also did a Stage I install at the time of the oil change. I have checked the air filter several times since and it is clean as a whistle.

I also replaced stock muffler with Rush turndown 1.75" . Checked for snug fit where the muffler meets pipe and no leaks.

There is definitely a leak somewhere just not enough to detect except by smell. If I can smell it it at 75mph it more than likely would be near front of engine wouldn't it?

Not a technical issue

Self inflicted rider farting problem as 75mph is too fast and your butt cheeks pucker up uncontrollably. The 06 bikes do not feature the fart grooves in the seat that are standard in the 2008 - Wisconsin touring edition.

Unfortunately, I can smell it when there is no vehicle in front of me. However, to Steelhorse's suggestion, he's absolutely correct. There is no fart extractor built into my ride and I guess I'll have to buy an '09 to correct this problem.

One other thing, I do have chrome covers on the tranny and the cast parts of the engine casing as well as inner and outer primary (O.K. I'm a chrome whore). Could oil have gotten between the covers on the engine casings and the engine? I hate the thought of taking on this crap off to look under it.

Lets digress a minute. You mentioned that you cross threaded a bolt... no wait, statement 2... Harley fixed it and also did an oil change....no wait, statement 3... They fixed it, did an oil change and also a stage 1.
Understand that the breathers from the heads are no longer enclosed in the filter housing and updrafts can bring the odor to the rider. If you have no leaks, you are not using oil then rub some oil de tush on your nostrils before you ride and forget about it. I have experienced this smell on all my rides at one time or another. Its more pronounced on my 09 SERG after the Heavy Breather install than on any other previous bike.

No, no, no buy the "new for '09" pre-grooved seat from Corbin. They are warrantied and guaranteed to convey even the heaviest beer-fart from the issuing sphincter at even low speed.

That is a distinct possibility. It will eventually burn off. I'm thinking that if you are satisfied that the bike isn't leaking oil or burning it and the oil level is consistent, then I would just let it be until it burns off.

The other option is to remove the chrome covers and clean up whatever is under it.
