I guess it's time to "formally" introduce myself!
As you can see, the handle is bear13, and the name is Don B.
The nickname "Bear" has followed me around since school-days.
At 6-3 and 285, go figure!!!!!!!!
Visualize a cross between Dan Haggerdy/Grizzly Adams & Charlie Daniels.
I've been mistaken for both!:D
I learned to ride in the mid-60's, @ age 10, on my late uncles BSA Lightning.
All I remember about those early experiences is, "Wow! I'll NEVER not do this!"
Beezerin' around Western Mass. was an awsome start to this great mode of transport!
Mostly rode the Lightning in those days, or if I could beg, borrow, steal one of my friends' Hondas, etc.
(Switchin' back & forth from left-shift/right-shift kept me alert!)
Moved to central Fla in '77 & picked up my own 1st bike, a hybred BSA, part Spitfire/part Lightning.
Still own it but not currently running!
BTW, anyone got a pair of Amal concentrics, about 32/34mm's?????
In mid-'82, I found an '81 920 Virago I could afford & brought it with me when I moved to the Atlanta area in the spring of '83.
For a metric back then, it wasn't a bad ride, but I had been bitten by the H-D bug for quite a few years at that point, & knew that was the goal.
Remember, this is Pre-Evo, Pre-Yuppie Infusion, tail-end of the AMF years.
BIKERS were not well though-of!
Oh, but that potata-potata!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Come July '84, my best friend, down in Daytona calls and says he's seen a '80 FLT for $2800! (Not a mis-print-$2800!)
Made a local call to another friend and sold the Yamaha.
Called Daytona back & said the cash would be there by noon, Western Union!
I had my HAWG!
Was I on top of it, or what?!?
3 months shy of 30, and ridin' a Tour Glide!!!!!!!!!
Well,1st, the starter quit. No kicker on a 5-speed!
Next, the engine turn-buckles needed replacing.
Brother, did that get things mis-aligned!
Then the rear chain busted; fun to replace in that enclosed, lithium grease
housing.
AMF!!!!!!! ARRRRRRRRGGGGHH!!!!!!!!!!
It happened that in the spring of '83, the MoCo produced a limited edition,
twin-belt, wide-glide to follow-up from the twin-belt Sturgis.
I had lusted mightily over that model, affectionately nick-named the "Willie G".
I stumbled upon one in a newly opened dealership in north Ala & 2 hrs later, had pounded out a trade deal for my FLT.
17 yrs later, although it looks like $hit from wear'n'tear & a Fla monsoon,
it still hauls my big butt down the rode.
Plan to start a cosmetic clean-up after Biketoberfest!
Also bought a 10 yr old FLHTC in'94, but lost it! (Another post, sometime)
I'm sure I've over-stayed my welcome this time out, but I'm happy to make y'alls aquaintence!

Welcome Bear13,

Great history, looks like you have a heck of a lot of experience. Do you have any pictures of the FLHTC, if not you need to get some once you put the make over on it after Biketoberfest.

Look forward to see it,

Dave

Wow ! I never heard of a twin belt drive except for the Sturgis model. I bet that is a collectors item for sure ! Post some pix when ya can.

Welcome Bear :) (fellow mid-ga rider!)

I work in the Macon area...drivin around all day jealous of all the people out on their bikes when I am stuck in my work van...

Are you a member of the Macon HOG chapter? I have been looking at the calendar, but haven't taken the opportunity to come out and see what they are all about. We just got a Hooters in Warner Robins....so maybe a War Town chapter will start up....that would be fun!

Take care and happy ridin!

Thanx for the holler-back folks!
Got a couple of pics of both the FLHTC & Willie G, VA V-Rod, but no scanner at this time.
Will figure out something, eventually.
The FLHTC is, tragically, long gone, due to some extreme BS of the ex's.
She's long gone, too!!!!!!!!!! :D
Hope to start cleaning up Willie G after Oct.
Hey, Tbone. The pics I have are current, "before" type.
Will try to get them up soon, and some decent "after" shots when I can.
Howdy, GASheDeViL! Good to hear from another local.
Have met a couple of other riders from the area, but trying to mesh schedules for get-together rides always seems tough.
I'm a former HOG , & ABATE member (from back in the 80's) but clubs just aren't where I'm at these days.
Doesn't mean we wouldn't totally enjoy riding with some other folks, though.
Holler back & we'll see if we can't set something up.
Take care & Ride safe
