I just put a 16" WindVest on my 2001 Night Train and I can't seem to find the "sweet spot" that they say will give you the optimum benefit. Maybe I'm expecting too much from a windsheild but I don't think that my glasses should shake off my face at 60 mph. I have a stock seat and I'm 5'8". I raised it, lowered it, pushed it forward and pulled it back but the vibration (buffeting) continues. Everybody that has one loves it (in the reviews I've read anyway), but I can't yet say that it's money well spent. Anybody have any suggestions or maybe photos of yours?

I've got a 16" windvest I use on my 2000 nightrain. It's my big windshield and works well but it has always had a strong updraft,no matter how I position it.I've got pull back drags and have it mounted clamps flush to the upper triple tree, as low as it goes. I cut out the bottom portion,3 to 4 inches in a semi circle to fit around the top of the headlight. Smoothed it out w/a drum sander. Fits and looks good...still has an updraft. I'd post pics if I could, shopping for a camera. I solved the updraft problem by buying a Flyscreen, not much face protection, but still cuts the blast on my chest, and no updraft.

I have a 14" Windvest on my Low Rider. It is adjusted so it is parallel with my fork. Wind is greatly reduced around my chest, but not as much by my head. It is less, though, than without the Windvest. Having riden for 13 years w/o any kind of windshield, this one even though it blocks only a small area, is a big difference. I am 6' and my seat is a little lower than stock. I probably could have got the 16", as the top of my vest is even with my lips instead of between my eyes. It works for me.

Deuce

I have a 14" on my Deuce and am about 5'8". I sit a little lower than stock. Given my height and needs, Windvest recommended the 14". Might be worth calling them back.

I look right over the top of my shield, and the angle is in line with the front forks, looking at a profile, maybe tipped a bit back.

I still get some shaking, it's not a perfect pocket of still air, but it gets me to about 80 mph and comfortable. At 70 or so, it's great.

The guy who runs the company suggests putting a towel or t-shirt in the open area to stop the up draft. I drilled extra holes to lower it to where it's almost touching my headlight. It's better than it was, but still not great. I may sale it if I ever get the desire to post it on e-bay. Just don't like windshields.

perhaps you should call windvest. did you buy directly from windvest? even if you didn't, they should answer your questions/concerns.

i like my windvest. i have a fatboy and i'm 6 ft. tall. i got the 16 inch tinted. i have 4 1/2 inch risers on my bars, so i had to get the duece hardware for installation. i adjusted the shield as high as it would go. i don't get updrafts with mine. in fact the updraft was worse with the stock harley king size windshield that i used to have.

my understanding is that the shield should be in line with your forks. the top of the shield should hit you on the mustache or so.

is your shield adjusted according to the instructions that came with it? where is the wind that is hitting you coming from? bottom? sides? top?
did you make any changes to your handlebars or risers before you bought the windvest? if so, you may need different hardware for proper installation.

Thanks to all for your replies. I think the major problem is the updraft from the tank. Listening to all of you I think that's just the way it's going to be. I suppose I'll start with it parallel with the rake of the fork again and start over. Hopefully I can "tune" it in the best I can on the Night Train. There are a lot of variables: seat height, rider height, windsheil height, angle, seating position, speed, type of helmet. It would be a tall order to make it "perfect". I did confer with WindVest customer service prior to my purchase and they suggested the 16", which is contrary to their website that says one doesn't need a 16" unless he's over 6'. I think the thought process was that you can adjust the 16" screen up or down 2" as opposed to just 1" on the 14" screen. Besides, I haven't read one review that says "I wish I had ordered the short one". Thanks again for your thoughtful and informative replies. You guys are great.

Windvest

What I wrote on another group:
you think that would eliminate the flutter on my riding glasses?

NO!! See photo...

Monterey Bay HOG had a run to Windvest factory, they installed AND ( after 5 test runs/ adjustments ) got it right. Started with 16", ended up with lowered 14".

'scuse da mess!!! You can see in the photo just how low to my headlight it is, stuck my finger up there for perspective.

I ride with a full face helmet. The buffeting with the 16" only SLIGHTLY improved with lowering it. Then went to 14" shield, big improvement. I am talking about the buffeting that would shake my whole helmet, NOT goggles or eyewear. The reason the buffeting is less is because I now have MORE DIRECT WIND BLAST TO THE HELMET which does stabilize it somewhat.
HAVE YOU TRIED E-MAILING WINDVEST AND EXPLAINING YOUR PROBLEM AND ASKING THEM WHAT SOLUTION THEY RECOMMEND?
tami@windvest.com is ( or was ) the office manager, she could at least get your question to the right folks, I bet.

Blasted thing wasn't letting me put in photo!

It's pretty interesting to hear that you ended up with a shorter windsheild. That's a first that I've heard. I'm going to give it a few more tries and then I'll follow your suggestion and call WindVest direct. Thanks for your response.
