Headlight Change

I have a 1985 FXR with the headlight that mounts from the top on a visor. I prefer the look of a bottom mount headlight and bought one that came off of a FXR4. The triple trees don't have any where to mount the headlight, so it looks like I will have to drill a hole in the lower tree for the mount. Also, the stock headlight has all kinds of wiring, plugs, and turn signal flashers crammed in it. The new headlight doesn't have the access for any extra wiring except what the headlight needs to light up, so the extra wiring will need to be rerouted under the tank somewhere.

I was just wondering if anyone else has been through this conversion and had any insight into the best way of going about it.

Thanks!

I did this change years 10 years ago. The wiring in the headlight got ripped out. I just rewired everything and tucked it all between the flat side tanks that I put on my 1990 FXRS. I drilled the stock lower tree to mount the headlight as you mentioned as well. Over the years the bike has gone through many changes but none as serious as now. I've since cut the front frame up and converted my trusty FXR into a FXRC, C is for "Chopper", 9 1/2 ft. long bike, but still a HD. Good luck on your project.
Thanks PROFX. I'd love to see your FXRC!!!
hi profx, with the chopper mods you did on your bike ,do you have any pics,and/or advice on doing such a rad mod ?i am thinking of a 7 degree, wide glide triple tree front end myself, your technique may be better.any advice would be appreciated

i wanted the same thing a bottom mount headlight. i made an hole in the rear/bottom big enough to take the biggest original plug . i then found a rubber grommet similar to whats inside a car engine bay for the wiring loom to go through then filled the hole with that. it was ideal till i could get my wiring sorted and you couldnt see much of the grommet anyway . good luck.

I initially thought about going that route with making a hole large enough for the plugs, but decided it was a good opportunity to run wiring through the handle bars and install a turn signal canceler. It took a lot longer than I anticipated (lots of planning and soldering), but the wiring looks really clean now. The new headlight is so sweet and I'm not running down the road blinking all the damn time.

Thanks for the good luck!
