Old post i know, but what they mean is to ground the purple wire running to the VOES. The reason for this is to full advance your ignition so that it may be set properly and viewed in the timing hole.
PS when i time bikes, i use white paint on mark, and then i push a piece of rubber hose threw the hole,sealing to the threads, so that it gently rest on the flywheel so it can be seen through the center of the hose, clearly instead of that stupid clear plug they sale but cant see **** with, so you don't get an oil and air mist money shot...
