I am looking for a good, deep, and loud exhaust for my Road King. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I am looking at Bassani pipes. Is anyone running these pipes? Complaints? From what I read, they don't rob power. I am also interested in V&H pipes. Would slip-ons do the trick or is there a benefit to completely changing out the exhaust? I am going with a Stage I setup. It's a 2002 RoadKing, if that helps. Thanks in advance for any help. J.T.

I have the V&H slip-ons on my '01 RC. It's better looking and sounding than the stock setup. Unless you have more than 88 cid I wouldn't bother with complete pipes unless there is something special you just can't live without.

Good luck.

Thanks, thomas_l. I only plan, at this point, to keep the stage I setup. I just want a louder and deeper sound, without losing low end torque. Thanks for the reply. J.T.

Road King exhaust

I have the Screaming Eagle slip-ons for my 00 RK and I love the sound. It is a deeper, richer and more mellow sound than stock but doesn't have the neighbors complaining when I crank it up in the middle of the night.

Well, there is this one couple that lives behind me ...

I run the D&D exhausts - 408-12S - on my 2001 RK. While not as loud as some, they give decent enough sound and aren't disturbing to the neighbors.

I have an '01 Road King, FLHRI. It's got the SE Stage 1 and V&H slip ons. I am very pleased :D with the sound. They are not the loudest pipes out there but they do command attention. There will be no power loss, maybe slight increase, be sure to have it dyno tuned no matter what you get.

Pipes

I have a set of the Bassani pipes on my '02 Road King. They are the best sounding pipes I have ever heard. They are deep sounding and seem to be in the middle on the loudness scale. I was set on a pair of Bubs origionally but then I heard the Bassani and have never considered anything else. They are a bit pricey but worth it in my opinion.

Thanks for the info., guys. Bogart, I have been looking at the Bassani pipes. I like the way they look, plus the curved tube(can't remember the name of it) does better than the stock cross-over. I have been leaning that way. I want a 2-into-2 system. I don't care for the 2-into1 look, but is the best for performance. I've read that the 2-into-1 sound better, at the low end and midrange. I really don't see making a lot of power gains in a 700+lbs. bike. I want something that looks good, sounds "pretty" loud, and doesn't rob my power with reduced back pressure. Thanks again. Hey, got any pictures?? J.T.

Bogart, do you have the Bassani slipons on a road king? The picture looks teriffic. I have a 02 efi king w/ the stage 1 and SE pipes. Does anyone know if I would have to reflash the computer chip? I'm not trying to get more power, just don't want to go backwards.

gbenner, someone like jimmyk, hippo, or supersport could answer the reflash question. I would do a forum search. I believe a reflash is in order for a stageI conversion, but don't quote me. Hope that helps. J.T.

I did the pipes/aircleaner/flash all at the same time... I dont think you would have to do the flash if you are just switching pipes. A friend who had the Bassanis and went to a single pipe did not switch. I would ask around here or ask your dealer. BTW I have an '02 efi RK as well.

Good Luck

One question for gogburn..what is envolved in having a bike dyno tuned after the StageI kit? I assume you were refering to that. Thanks to you or anyone else who can answer the question. J.T.

Greg,

If your dealer installed the stage I kit, they undoubtedly did the reflash at that time.look here

fearnot,

There is/was a running discussion of the cause and effects of stage I upgrades on EFI baggers on Preacher's TC88 thread

From what I understand, intalling the stage 1 breather kit (w/ reflash) and installing freer flowing slip-on pipes causes efi baggers to pop on deceleration (some bikes worse than others). Mine pops a little, I think it sounds cool so I don't sweat it.

One solution is to install a PowerCommander III and alter the fuel profile. Another solution may be HD's new race tuner .

Regards,

wyo

Sorry, I wasn't clear. The dealer Did do a reflash for the SE slipons. I wondered whether I would need another different reflash for the Bassani exhaust? I would gues that what I already have is close enough?

Good stuff !

I have been running the V&H slip on's, slash cut, with a SE Stage 1.

(1) Performance increase noted

(2) Sound? Never to my likeing.

I pulled the baffels and removed the fiberglass. Sounded better and preformance was great.

Still lacked the sound I was looking for.

Purchesed a set of Sampson Slip On's. Better sound, ( louder and deeper) and I am told no loss of power.

Will not be able to comment on that until Friday when Baby comes home.

The Stage 1 conversion will take care of the chip.

wyodude, my 2002 RK is carb.ed. I assume the same applies to EFI bikes. Thanks for the assistance.
JimmyK, I was looking at the Sampson Slip-On's. Looked at the price for the 2-into-2 crossover and thought do I need this with a stock 88"? You know my inexperience and what I've read, slip-on's are the way to go. No need to completely replace the exhaust. I would like to run around and do a 'listening' comparison to decide. I still have time to break in the bike and decide when it's time. I want good sound, but no power loss. Power gain is just gravy! Thanks. J.T.
