Engine light

I have been changing the exhaust on bike (RK 99), I just finished today, all I did was take v and h off, and put back the dual factory mufflers.

This took about a week and a half from start to finish, had to wait for pipes I bought to come in, and had to put off a few days to get parts from dealer.

The job went good and looks great, finally going to have the fiberglass bags instead of the leather throw overs. Forgot I did that too.

Now when I tried to start the bike to here how the exhasust sounded, the battery was dead. I jump started it from my car, and it started no problem.. Now the engine light is on, and stays on. I left it charge for a long while in the garage, hoping that this would turn the engine light off, well it did, so I decided to take it down the road to further along the batteries charge. Well not even 1000 ft and the light came back on, and I brought it back.

Is there something I did that caused this to happen, The only other thing that happened was the the oil was low, almost a quart.

I have since filled the oil and light still on, afraid to take it out for fear it will leave me sitting, I thought I would ask you guys before doing anything else, don't want to screw things up.

Bike has always run good before and never any problem, till I let it set for a few days to change exhaust.

Help is despartely needed

check output of charging system.
Measure the voltage of the battery and it should be ~12.8Vdc. When the bike is running the voltage should be higher. I think about ~12.9 to ~13.6 depending on rpm. Get the factory repair manual and it will explain how to test the whole electrical system.

Thanks for the help, I am guessing to go ahead and get a new battery. Its just me and the bike here, if I had repair manuals and testing equipment, I would probably know what was wrong.

I miss the old days.
It may be from your exhaust sensors. I put Reinharts on and cruising around at 30 mph my engine light comes on and if I pick up my speed, more air goes through the pipes and light goes off. I have a 07 Ultra and I unplugged the sensors with my pipes. My mechanic said this would happen. Just a thought.

A lot of good suggestions .It very well could be charging system or battery .without seeing or being able to test it is hard to say. Your bike being a 99 it doesn't have the sensors that are on A 07 so I would rule that out. One more suggestion your engine light will come on if oil pressure drops below 3psi. could be as simple as the wire on the sending unit having A bad connection. Although I would suspect the same as others.

I do not know if..... advance auto..... sells bike batteries, but I am going to call and find out. They will test the battery and I will find out that way. I have not had one tested there that was not bad. But the new battery did fix the problem, just kinda funny.

Thanks for the help, sugestions,!drunk! and especially your time

I'm curious, what is a 3 gal. aux fuel cell?? Also, tell me the story about the 1500 mi ride in 23 hrs. Gotta be a great story in there that has to do with this fuel cell thing. Alan
