My ride is a 96 E-Glide Classic. Two questions:

1. I noticed recently that my voltage gauge needle sticks on occasion. I know it's not a loose wire cause I checked that when it first happened. The last two times it happened, I gave the glass a little tap with my finger and the needle rose from 0 to it's normal operating position. Anyone else had this problem?

2. Anyone know where the sensor is for the air temp gauge? The thing is notoriously inaccurate and it's useless the way it is. If I knew where the sensor was, I might try relocating it.

I have never had the volt meter stick but I did have the plug come loose from the back on mine. The air temp sensor is in the fairing and looks like a little white box shaped thing. I now have an oil temp gauge in its place.

NHfree1 - sensor is a light weight wire coming off back of unit. It just kinda hangs there inside the fairing - hence the high temp readings. I spliced into the wire and ran it out and under the fairing at the bottomm of the headlight opening. It let it read fairly accurate from there. Not a big job really? Hope that helps!

I thought about replacing the gauge but I have an oil temp dipstick so it would be redundant though easier to read while riding. Was the oil temp gauge/sensor fairly easy to install?

Thanks for the advise on the wire. I'll look for that wire and probably extend it like you say next time I'm kicking the mice out of my fairing which will be in the coming week. Seems they like making their nest in there but they haven't done any damage yet. I heard they don't like fabric softener sheets so I'll be adding a few of those in there too along with some poison bait as a backup.

Replacing the gauge itself is the easy part. The hard part is putting the sensor in the oil tank and running the wire. I'd love to have something in that space that actually meant something too. But the juice just isn't worth the squeeze yet for me.

Serious? In the fairing? Mice? How the heck do those little varmints get up in there? I know those suckers can crawl up a lot of surfaces, but dang...

I think they're getting in on the bottom where the outer fairing meets the bike below the headlight. There's a piece of soft rubber there that's easy for them to move out of the way and clime aboard. Believe me...it looks funny having mouse traps set on my floorboards...but I've done it to try to catch them. Just a pain (could be a real pain if I snap my fingers in it) to have to reset them every time I get back from a ride. The bait blocks I got have a neat little hole in the middle....perfect size for a zip-tie. I'll put a few of them in there along with some dryer sheets and see if that works.

I found out that my air temp gauge runs 5°C to high in the range from 10 till 35°C compared to road side information due to the heat radiation of the v-twin.
It 's a pity that "continental" H-Ds do not have Celsius -readings, I put little stickers on the glass which is always has condensation on the inner side for the first 30 minutes.

the temp gauge needs a thermocouple not just one wire.. Its a little white box like 3/4 by 1/2.. I havent looked at mine lately. Sitting on the bike its on the left inner fairing support (the black one) I cant totally remember how it works i just put an oil temp in its place..

Never had a problem with the voltage gauge.

I took the temperature sensor off the bracket and zip tied it to the left fork tube just above the rubber stopper doughnut. I didnt splice any wires. I just rerouted the factory ones. It sits between the inside of the left fork tube and the neck. I can see it if I turn the forks all the way to the right.

Thats prolly a better choice than inside the damn fairing. For the life of me i just dont understand what the %uC* they were thinking here. Someone had their head in their A$$

So which is it boy's, the little white box or a wire coming out of it? If I relocate the box and find out I could have simply extended a wire I'm going to feel like a jackass. The service manual makes no mention of a sensor wire, only a sensor. I'm headed out to check it out for myself. Extending a wire doesn't seem to add up as it still has to pass through the warmer area within the fairing elevating the displayed temp. Thanks and I'll let you know what I find out.
