Just picked up a set of new Dunlop D402 tires for my '98 FLHTC, that I purchased through a local metric cycle shop.

I'm wondering about when they were manufactured, i.e. freshness. I'm looking at the recessed area, where it looks like the tire was "branded" with date of manufacture. Front tire says "4601", rear tire says "4401". I take this to mean the 46th and 44th week of 2001. So it looks like I got tires that are 3-4 months old.

Do you guys get "fresher" tires than that when buying over the internet? If so, who do you buy from? What do you pay with shipping?

I got pretty reasonable prices on these tires - $80 front, $90 rear +tax. They will also mount them for $10 each. I bought them at this shop because of these fairly good prices, and also because I was already there buying Bel Ray EXS synthetic 10W-50 to try in the motor (running Mobil1 V-Twin 20W-50 now).

Thanks,

Looks like you are right. FMVSS109 changed to four digits.

In any case a three month old tire is very good, it's pretty much how long it takes to get from the manufacturing plant to the retailer. Some tires on the shelves at some places are a couple of years old.

There is a D.O.T. code on every tire. It's like a Vin # or Bike ID #. It's only on one side of the tire and next to the Letters "DOT" It's ten digits long and the last "THREE" numbers tell you the date of manufacture. And they are usually in a small plate imprint at the end of the DOT#.
EXAMPLE.... (448) Would be 44th week on 1998 or (169) would be 16th week of 1999.

Newer tires now come with 11 digit DOT # and the last four (4) digits give the week then year as in 18735463301 the 3301 would be the 33rd week of 2001. The earlier 10 digits would look like this; 87354339 and only the last three digits,339 would represent the 33rd week on 1999.

I hope this helps.

yep, my new front tire says:

DOT DATR M2A 4601

So it was manufactured in the 46th week of 2001.

Thanks!
