I have been chasing down some docking hardware numbers for an obsolete rack. This has been very confusing. so far:

Rearmost mount: 53127-96a,b, &c 53804-06
next to rear: 53746-97a,b 53804-06 included
next to front: 53540-97b (94-97 53658-05) 53803-06 included
frontmost mount 53104-97a,b,&c (94-7 53660-05) 53803-06

I believe that there are earlier numbers(maybe some later ones)I think tha the a parts are good for 95-97.

Do these interchange?

could we make a sticky what racks and bars need which?

Paul, I think in 05/06 they consolidated the kits to help with the confusion that existed before that time, yes, it was worse! I know I mounted the docking kit for passenger backrest on my 08 RG yesterday and the mounting hardware kit I used (53804-06) had several different options for different models and years. There were extra parts in there to accomadate the differences in the models/years. Just as a side note, one of the bolts in the main fender support barcket had been crossthreaded so badly from the factory that I busted the head off trying to get it out. This bothered me on two fronts, first, how cheap are those bolts that you could twist off a large torx bolt head trying to remove it and two, the obvious, what the he!! were they doing when they were building my bike?! had to drill and tap the hole on a brand new bike, that kinda pisses me off!

adlerx, maybe its the moon or just Harley quality control. I just put a new "brake" running light on the fender of an 06 FLHX. I had to take a lot off the back of the bike to get the darn light off the bottom of the fender.

The T-30 torex tool broke trying to get the docking hardware off the bike. I finally got it off with a lot of sweat and locking vice-grips. YUP-- boggered up but off. AND THE BOLT IS CROSS THREADED......... So now I have to get a new bolt, new tool, and try to run a tap to straighten out the hole/threads. Then line up the brackets and put it back together. The brakets do not look to line up, so its probably why the dealer or factory just cranked it in there to begin with.

Well I feel for ya, doing the same dance.

We also mounted a detachable backrest for our SO over the weekend.

We used the Front Kit 53803-06

There were indeed "extra" parts for use with other mounting kits.

Had to add an extra washer on both sides to get the detachable mount to match the spool, but once that was completed.

Works like a charm
