i went down to the Dealership Yesterday to buy the Detachable kit to take off the tour Pack on my 2011 RGU. The Service Rep told me the only problem there having with these kits are, when you take off the tour pack and turn the bike on it goes through a system check to make sure everything is working, when it doesn't pick up the two back speakers the engine light goes on. Now I can't beleave that they would sell a kit, and not have a way to by pass the system. Can anybody give some info on this, and tell me what you did to solve this problem, Thank you very much.

novice opinion here, but I install/uninstall my pizza box ( with speakers ) all the time. It's an 06. No engine light. Unless it's something HD changed for the newer bike ?

If I were you, I'd just unplug the speakers and start the bike to verify the stealer's idea.

I have a 2011 RGU and installed the kit myself. I have not had an engine light come on yet and I did the work a year ago. I did not have to make any kind of changes. Just followed the instruction for the install.

I'd like to know how this works out... Do you have lighting going to the pizza box ? Maybe a speaker 'switch' ?

There I go listening to a Harley tec who has no Idea what he's talking about. I went to talk to the service manager, and asked him, he took me to the electronics guy who told me this was the first, they ever herd of that. I had to tell them that it was there service writer who told me this. He was off today but when he come's in Monday, he's going to have some explaining to do. thanks guys for helping me out. I can't wait to be able to take off the tour pack when not traveling.

Not to talk anyone into or out of a detachable tour pack. But some thing to think about is are you really going to take it off that much?
I had the detach on my last RG it seemed as time went on I took it off less and less.
The mod is not cheap and any part that will detach is going to have wear points that need replacement over time.
I know how good they look with it off.

I'm confused.... U said yourself you tried disconnecting the speakers and it caused the engine light to come ON. So what was the cause ??

I'm not sure, Im bringing the bike in one day this week so they can do the install, I'll find out if the ecm put out any codes.

Betting it will be just fine. As I said before a know a few with RGU that have done this and none have had any issues

I have had my detach kit on my 2011 RGU for a year now and 16000 miles with no isues LOL. I have mine off and on all the time. When I ride solo it comes off when my wife rides it goes back on (i had one on my 04 EGC and that was the one accessory I told my wife that I absolutely had to have when I bought my RGU). Don't pay the dealer to do it just do it yourself. It is an easy install..I can also tell you they do not cause any codes to be thrown. I check mne all the time and never have I thrown a code in 16000 miles.

I cant wait to find out why this guy who works in Harley Service department told me this crap. I remember when I first bought the bike I had asked on this forum if anybody had done this upgrade. people sent me pic's like yours with the tour pack off and nobody said anything about that back then, that's why I was really surprised when I went to the service department to find out what they would charge me to do the install and he tells me all this crap. I am going to take your advice and do it myself, I usually dont have the patience to do this but how hard can it be.

Then that is done through the RG custom fica on it and some spoiler lights on the bags.
This is also simple not to costly and will not cause any codes.

Hey Jeff I'm not surprise they told you that, I'm not sure if is the same dealer I went too, but they told me when I was looking at the 2012 RKC that I would need new brake lines and a new electronic throttle if I wanted to install the Heritage style bars, that's how I found this forum and found out they were lying, you shouldn't have any trouble doing the job your self, service engine light should not be affected by the radio, if it does then HD has really screwed up.

Oh, horror of horrors! Misinformed at the parts counter of the Harley shop? What is this world coming to? Unless the counter guy has grey hair or no hair, I too would be a little skeptical about any information they might try to impart. I note that my local franchised HD shop has three young men behind the parts counter, all about 25 years of age. I have asked them all what they ride. They all "ride" Fords and Chevys. Not one rides a motorcycle. I call them chrome specialist salesmen. There are some old heads around that know what they are talking about but they are about as hard to find as a 1969 Harley that does not leak oil.

I feel your pain, I thought about taking the tour Pak off my 2011 SE Ultra but I also have an amplifier bolted under the tourpak. I was told the whole speaker system takes a dump if I unplug that to lose the pack etc.
