I was just looking at the HD site regarding specs on
the 2009 Electraglides and one item caught my eye....
"Dealer Setup not included" !

What kind of gouging would this entail? Couple hundred dollars?
Couple thousand dollars?

I realize bikes don't come "ready to go"from the factory but
what would be realistic?

Thanks

that's where some dealers get you, set up, freight and hidden charges like it a big deal to handle the paperwork so charge them for that too. msrp, yes that s stands for suggested so the vehicle price can be higher before all the other charges as well.

I go here, msrp, free freight and set up without hidden fees.

I haven't bought new in a couple of years, but I seem to recall it's normally in the neighborhood of $750-$1,000. Someone will jump in if I'm way off.

freight usaly depends on the area. Set up depends on the dealer. Some charge for both some none some for just one it all depends, Set up in my area seems to run about 300.00 and then the dealers will usaly throw in the first service for free. This is a good reason to shop around. Another thing a lot of dealers are doing now is throwing on some add ons before the bike hits the floor. Now they not only get the unseen mark up on the part they get they major labor cost also. If you do not know and trust a dealer look around price things out the bikes are out there. More then most can sell in the year and deals can now be made. I have seen prices below msrp lately.

It can vary dramatically within the same locale. My regular dealer tried screwing me by charging $270 over MSRP, $375 freight, $550 dealer prep, and a MISC $65 fee. That was Conrad's Harley Davidson in Joliet, IL. Offered a 3 month 20% off parts.

The next dealer I checked was MRSP for the bike, and $375 for everything else. That was Chi-Town HD in Tinely Park, IL. No discount on parts.

The the third dealer was Chicago HD and charged me $1000 below MSRP and only $150 for a dock fee. They offered lifetime 20% off parts, but they'll give that deal to anyone who walks in. Needless to say, Chicago HD got my business.

This was for a 2009 Red Hot Sunglo Street Glide with cruise, security, and wire wheels. So shop around and don't be afraid to haggle.

Freight is usually the same for everyone, to make it fair, even if you are close to the factory. Setup varies by dealer. At the 105th I saw $750 setup fees at one of the dealers plus 335 freight. What a hose job! Mike

freight is a set amount, it says on the website... the dealer gets paid by HD to "prep" the bike, so don't fall for that... the bike is almost ready to go out of the crate, they just hafta put the mirrors on, go over the bike and peel the plastic and wash it...

When I bought my Streetglide in April my dealer told me they charge $1100 for freight and setup on Touring bikes. They gave me $1000 off MSRP price and waived the freight and handling. Got two t-shirts too. Haven't gotten a bike for less than MSRP since late in 1981 when I bought my 1981 Sturgis for $800 off MSRP and no frieght and set up charge.

Interesting. I suspected this was the case, but hadn't bothered to confirm it. If anyone wanted to call HQ, will they confirm they pay the dealers for prep?

Setup and other BS charges

The brochure says $375 for freight. Dealers in Southeast quoted prep of $250-650, and document fee of nothing to $500. I could find no one below MSRP and one at $1000 over. I think they have their blinders on to what is happening in the real world. I got my Streetglide for MSRP plus 375 freight and 250 prep after much ridiculous haggling. My bike came prepped with the fuel and temp gauges not working, some prep!!

Dealer set-up prices

Having worked for a Harley dealer years ago, I'll offer the following to help you better understand the situation. MOCO charges the dealer $375-$400 for delivery from the factory to the dealers location. So, here, the dealer is just passing on the cost to the consumer. Each service area runs as a cost center in each dealership. The service dept. charges the dealer $100 to uncrate the bike and make several small adjustments that the factory can't do because of shipping ( adjust and raise the handlerbars, put on the windshields on some bikes, connect the batteries on all bikes, etc.) Again, the dealer passes these cost on to the consumer. Total add on should not be more than around $500 for freight and prep with additional monies if you are having the dealership do your motor vehicle work.Other than that you should expect to pay MSRP or lower for the bike. Most dealer have about a 20% mark-up on the MSRP price and some choose to make less money by incorporating the freight/prep charges into their 20% profit. So, in some dealerships you'll pay nothing to small dollar amounts for F &P and in others you'll pay what the dealer paid for the F & P and in still others you'll pay in excess for the F & P.
It pays to shop when looking for the new ride.

And keep in mind, supply and demand will play a big factor. This seems to be regional as well. I've noticed that on average prices are higher here in Central Texas vs. where I used to live in Oregon.

More demand I suspect, and it's somewhat of a captive market. With cars, a trip to one of the two surrounding large cities yielded significant savings. I wonder if the same is true on cycles. I'll find out shortly. :)
