Crane Cams HI-4ATC troubleshooting

Anyone have experience with this ignition? Is there a way to troubleshoot the box itself? Been troubleshooting the bike for a couple weeks now. It acts like the timing is off. The bike has started at seemingly random times while checking things (twice). I've actually pushed it off twice since the troubles started and it ran great the entire time. After running for a while from the push start I shut it off and it fired right back up. Once it cooled off, right back to the same problem. Actually dug up the OEM ignition module last night and tried it. With the exception of it not backfiring through the carb, no change. I'm not one for randomly changing parts without a means of verifying they are indeed bad. Right now I'm thinking it has to be:

1. Ignition module is toast and firing randomly (resulting in the two times it has started from the starter button). But would this not also cause issue's the two times I've pushed it off and it ran like it should?

2. Cam sensor....If it is giving intermittent signals, the ignition could possibly be confused?:confused::confused:

3. A short in the wiring somewhere. Hopefully not because I know how much fun this will be find! I have looked at the wires in the ignition module connector to the point they go into the sleeve but that is as far as I've looked so far.

Any ideas???

Thanks for the help!

Did I miss something?

What exactly is your problem?

Bike won't start. First hiccup happened after riding one morning. Stopped for a break and the bike sat for roughly an hour. Got back on to leave and had difficulty starting. After several tries and almost flooding it, it finally fired up. Drove on home without issue. Similar issue the next two starts. Difficult but did start and ran smooth. Went out the next day and would not start at all. I checked and getting good spark. Got it to a shop and thought the Carb had an issue. Had the Carb rebuilt but still no change. That's why I'm back to electrical....

I wish I could help you with this problem, but unfortunately I'm have a similar problem. Only my 99 1200c sportster keeps cranking even after it is started. So also when it's shut off, an turn the key to on position it will immediately start cranking without even hitting the start button. Hopefully I can find some results along with you. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanx

cam sensor first

I would check the cam sensor first. Look and see if it appears to be melting or going bad.

Well the cam sensor looks to be fine. Still troubleshooting! Might've possibly found the big issue yesterday. With a brand new battery fully charged, we put a meter to it. Initially when pressing the starter it showed 12 volts. About 3 seconds later it was down to 8 volts. Thinking the problem might be the starter itself. Going to pull it this week and get it torn down. Maybe this will finally be it?

I wonder if the starters solinoids contacs are welding together. Pigpin. On why the starter would turn over when you turn the key on. Intermitten problem. If it does it every once in a while Hawkguy. Welds together and breaks loose.

Hawkguy. If the starter solinoid contac is welded or burnt. Thinking the voltage would drop on the whole system. Burnt contacs would make the amp draw larger than normal. Could you test voltage at the cam sensor with just the key on. Then voltage when trying to start it.

Part of the troubleshooting has been to check just about every single wire on the bike. Did find one wire to the ECM that showed signs of getting hot. Wasn't burnt badly but probably happened while continuously trying to start. Other than that one wire which has been replaced now, all other wiring checked out good. I can try to check the voltage as you suggested before I pull the starter though.
