Laconia isn't what it used to be, every 7/11 store clerk is an auxiliary cop with an attitude !!! They hasseled a freind for pulling over because his bike was overheating, have to get a room for a week !!! I live one and a half hours away so I take a couple day trips. I like daytona because I'm riding while it is snowing home and lets not forget BIKINIS !!!! And Sturgis has some of the best riding anywhere. Laconia is one of the oldes and the riding is nice but it doesn't compare. If you get a chance do daytona / sturgis or both !! Lots of nice smaller events, if you don't mind mud/dust there is the rendezvous in new york !!

The badland was a fantastic site. We went early in the morning on the way to sturgis (2100 miles each way riding, not trailering)and it was only 80 degrees, beautiful and worth the trip !!! Don't know if I would have enjoyed it as much in the 100+ degree heat that I hear is the norm.

Dennis, yeah I usually go both weekends but day trips. I rode there and back three seperate days last year (less than 100 miles each way). The year before that there was a single nite friday at the cottages on the little canal so I stayed overnight. Too many police with attitudes there, if I stay too long I'm bound to get in trouble. (they'll ticket or arrest you for saying show me your t!ts)!!
There is a very cool book called road trips USA, its all about the two lane roads all over this country. Route 1 from maine to Key West. Route two that goes from Mass all the way to the west coast. And six or eight more. It gives out points of interest all along the way, places to stay and eat and most are reasonable because they are off the beaten path. Some interesting reading and trips if you get the chance to check it out.
