Hey, it is 7 degrees here in Ohio and it is time for warmer thoughts! Anybody planning any cool bike trips this summer? I am going down the Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Laconia isn't what it used to be, every 7/11 store clerk is an auxiliary cop with an attitude !!! They hasseled a freind for pulling over because his bike was overheating, have to get a room for a week !!! I live one and a half hours away so I take a couple day trips. I like daytona because I'm riding while it is snowing home and lets not forget BIKINIS !!!! And Sturgis has some of the best riding anywhere. Laconia is one of the oldes and the riding is nice but it doesn't compare. If you get a chance do daytona / sturgis or both !! Lots of nice smaller events, if you don't mind mud/dust there is the rendezvous in new york !!

Hey TA and YFB, I've been going to Laconia since the mid 70's and last year was the last. $200 fine for flashing? Cops hold hands down the entire lenght of rt. 3. And it's more like spring break with the kids in the SUV's then bike week.
Go to the Rendezvous in NY the weekend after Loconia. Old time biker party with lots of beer, rodeo and titties. Only rules are nobody gets hurt and some real nice riding in the area after the hangover wears off

this past summer i took a solo trip and rode 2500 miles from missoula, mt to vicksburg ms. it was my first trip on a bike and it was an eye opener. just got a wild hair and decided to take a trip of a lifetime. planned a return route, flew up to mt and bought a bike and rode it back.

unless you have done it, you will never know what it feels like to put sound logic and reasoning aside and go off chasing a dream. i think everyone should take the time to face themselves in the mirror and say "it is something i want to do, and there aint a living soul that will tell me i cant and convince me not to! i'll be back when i get back and thats that!"

my experience is one i will take to the grave and never once will i have to say "if i would have only taken the time to do such and such."

i think i even sleep better at night.

anyway, it is personally rewarding to make your big plans and follow them through to the last mile.

I already have a trip planned (OK it's in the works) To go down to Deal's Gap. I'm coming back a Dragon Slayer. It's gonna be one hell of a ride !!!:D About 800 miles to get there, leaving on Fri AM 5/02, ride all day Sat, and run home sunday in time to get some sleep before work on Mon. I figgure about 2K miles for that weekend. I'm debating Sturgis, depending on funds and arrangements. Laconia is gonna happen. Factory tour in York is gonna happen. The Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport, NY. Probably the Indian Museum in Springfield, Mass.
Yep, I'll be busy.........

And Cooperstown....... National Baseball HOF.... Can't forget that one.

....I plan on making the 100th (short trip) and trying to swing Sturgis. Nailed plans are to leave Northern Illinois with stops in Lansing MI, Frederick MD, Wash DC, Richmond VA, Rocky Mount and Charlotte NC, Atlanta GA and back. Visiting relatives in each city, in 10-14 day period. As of tonight, it's solo for the most part.

Yo hogg831!

If you have some time when your in the DC area, I'd recommend visiting the NRA museum in Vienna, VA (its free!).

Easyriderdan, I will be in the Asheville area around the first week of August and thenI will go on down to Bristol to the drag races. Next year I am going to ride to South Dakota. I have always wanted to see the Badlands. To gps4, this is exactly the way that I think, even if my friends think that I am crazy!

A Hell of a ride is an understatement! I ride it all the time. The first tme my wife said "Don't do it by yourself. It's too dangerous. I said OK" and 45 minutes later I was in "The Whip", one of the early switchbacks. Another 20 minutes, I had my first "I survived" shirt. It's great. Visit www.tailofthedragon.com/maps/DRAGONmap.gif

This is a full site about it but the above link will give you maps. Good lick and take it real easy the first ride. :)

TmrHrrs: I've been down the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Skyline Drive...both beautiful rides. Remember the speed limit on the Parkway is 45...but it's O.K. 'cause you're looking at the scenery anyway!

I don't know where you are in Ohio, but I took route 50 across West Virginia to get to the start of Skyline Drive (in Virginia) and I WILL make that ride again. Good pavement, mountain roads. You're not going to make good time though, so if you want to make time, don't take 50.

If you end up in Cherokee, take the ride to Deal's Gap and ride "The Dragon". I stayed a week at the "Crossroads of Time" motel a couple of years ago, and it was just a bunch of bikers laughin' & lyin'. Watch out for the sport bikers, though...them boys is crazy!

This year, I'm planning on two weeks in Idaho...wanna ride the BIG mountians! Also gonna spend a day at the 100th B-Day Party in Milwaukee, then come home around Lake Superior...and I might take a buddy of mine (who is a Rolling Rock fanatic) to Latrobe, PA. ...or Mecca, as he calls it.

It should be a very good year.
