I am heading up to CT for the weekend, possibly on the bridgeport ferry or merrit pky, any route suggestions out there, I have been up there alot but I would like to find some roads only the locals are familiar with. We will probably stay in hartford 'cause I know where I can get a room, but that's not set in stone, we will ride all day, drink all night, then head home on sunday.

thanks in advance!

In the eastern direction, you can take route 2 to route 169. 169 is one of the most scenic roads in CT. Going west you can take route 44 to route 202 through the Litchfield hills out to route 7. You cant go wrong with the northern corners of the state, just take a backroad and get lost, your never really too far from a main road.

Why not take the ferry into New London, head North and pick up Rt 169 through Pomfret and Woodstock, then pick out a nice route heading West, possibly as far as Litchfield area and then back to Hartford.

The time and hassle you save taking the ferry will leave you refreshed for the riding!

If you decide to come into New London, send me a PM or E-mail, maybe I'll join you for part of the ride.

I gotta agree with THEBEAR, Rt 169 is a beautiful road. From NY or Bridgeport you could take the Merit Pky to Meridan and then catch 66 through Middletown, and head east to Rt 16 into Colchester, then 207 through Baltic and catch 138 to Sprauge and then 169 north all the way to Woodstock and just before the Mass line catch 197 to 198 back down to 44 then into Hartford.

You could always skip Hartford and when you catch 169 in Lisbon you are just 10 miles away from Foxwoods and 15 miles from Mohegan Sun Casinos. There are plenty of small hotels in the areas if the casino hotels are full.

leaving from new london is an option, last 2 times we did the eastern side coming up from bridgeport, then the next day came home from new london, so going the other way might be an option gotta talk to the other rider.

wesslvm-I will pm you when we decide our final rt.

btw last time was quite a fiasco, my buddy got a nail in his tire at the new london ferry, tire was dead flat by the time he rolled on to the ferry, 60 miles nursing that baby home lots of fix a flat needed for a spoked rim.

thanks for all the suggestions, as duece said another couple of weeks should be real nice also, we try to head upstate or ct as much as possible, Long Island gets old for riding, I think I have ridden on 169 but don't remember, 2 years ago, we just kept trying to find wine trails and road for hours on end, you guys are pretty lucky.

Shouldn't rule out the western side of Rhode Island. Rts 14, 101, 6 and 44 all lead into RI, 14 to 102 back to 44 west, yada, yada, yada.

Those are the roads us Central Mass folks like to ride.

Don't forget 138 from CT to Jamestown (Beavertail is a great stop), Newport, Narragansett/Gallilee (George's or Champlins great seafood on the docks), etc..

Eastern side of 95 sucks though. I like 138 as well, use it to get to Misquamicut (395-138-49-2-78-Beach!) but west of 95 has all the less-interupted riding.

A few years ago, Thealien and I met up with FXDean, Sportyredhead, T-Bag, GAtor and a few others at Marcus Dairy. We then rode 7 North, had a few beers in Norfolk where the NY/NJ contingient went west and we rode east to Stafford Springs, then the Pike. That was a real nice ride.

We do CT and RI all the time because of the lids and roads!

See you at the Bac-Dor!

Looks like we will be doing the western side this time, going to leave from queens, no point in going back east to orient, not sure about sunday, a few guys are talking about meeting us, so we probably would stay on the western side. thanks for all the suggestions, I know I will use these roads, maybe not this weekend but someday.

Been there for many $1 roast beef Sunday lunches this summer, made it to the pig roast a few weeks back too.

Sunday October 7th is the big fall Marcus Dairy gathering I plan on hitting. Have never made it out there before so I'm looking forward to it.
Not the same anymore. The PC folks and the owners of the nearby mall put the kabosh to it a few years back.

Maybe take a ride to the Dor tomorrow. Sunday afternoon ride is out this week due to the Pats playing at 1 pm!

I'm a big Pats fan too but riding trumps football while the weather is good, we are heading to Sturbridge, MA via 169 this Sunday. Saturday is Barre VT, Lebanon, Concord and Keene, NH (for the "Ride New England" contest) and then back from Keene to Lisbon, CT via Rt. 12-140-31 (your neck of the woods), a new route for me.

I know they squashed the Marcus Dairy thing on normal Sundays but twice a year, in the Spring and Fall, they still do the Super Sunday thing. October 7th this Fall. But I just found out that the fall Super Sunday conflicts with Sheldon's "VT Apple Pie Run" on the same day. We usually don't ride with your Worcester folks too often so I am really leaning towards the "Pie" ride instead.

Pats football supercedes riding, especially since we lost that other camera view!

Did lunch at Cady's Tavern today. I don't recommend the Fish and Chips.
