The case saver gaskets work quite well (I've had one on a Shovel for many years and installed others on customer bikes). No way I'd tear down a short block for that lip alone. I put one of thos gaskets on a 93 FXR that some idiot had forced the inner primary on with a mallet and had a large crack in it.
About the only thing I did different was I coated both side in hylomar aerograde and it has sealed it and not one drop of oil.
