I am looking for a cam for my 96" Stage I Dyna. I enjoy doing some research and understanding why one cam is better for certain types of riding than another etc.
I am looking for a cam with low end-mid range torque. I won't be doing the heads at this time.
I've found lots of good choices I believe and there may not be a lot of difference in these cams. But I'd really like to understand what makes a cam better for low end torque vs. high end torque or HP. I don't need to know intricate detail but some basics would sure help me. I.E. Overlap in nnn range is good for low end torque. Intake opening at nn degrees is better for blah...blah..blah..
Kind of a Cams for dummies if you know what I mean.

Here are two example cams I've looked at.

Andrews 37G .510 dur I 236 dur E 240 Int 18/38 Exh 46/14
Woods TW6-6 .510 dur I 240 dur E 240 Int 20/40 Exh 42/18

Thanks in advance!

The intake closing effects low rpm cylinder pressure - which effects torque. You can compensate for the reduction in cylinder pressure by raising compression. A late closing intake valve will give you more torque in the higher rpm's.

and then there are a bunch of other aspects of the cams also.....

Splitting Lanes explained it best in simplified form!!! Intake close is the most important timing event!!! If you want tq stick with cams with early intake closings.Just be mindful of your comp with these cams; They don't like alot of comp, it causes ping issues!!!!

Don't overlook this cam, it has been used with and w/o head work and just keeps getting better with compression and porting. George at Moronies H-D in New York uses lots of these in his bagger builds.

I was leaning toward the TW-6-6 as well. Not planning on any head work this winter and hoping to do just a cam. When I talked to Bob Woods he said this cam would work well as a drop-in and even better with head work and more comp. I looked at the new 408-44 as well. But looks like it would really like more comp and possibly 103 cubes?

Thanks.

Both are great cams, but you have to decide what will be you final goal on the finished build. You ultimately want tq or Hp? You can always use a +4 gear advancer. It would really help with the TW6 but with the 408 your going to need some comp!!!!

I put a Wood 6 into my stage 1 dyna and then got it tuned. I can send you the dyno chart if you PM me your e-mail address.

It's also posted in the dyno section of this forum.
pm sent. thanks!

I think I'm going to keep it pretty basic. If I decide to do the heads then I'd probably do a 103" kit as well. And I think that's more money than I really want to spend. I just want a little more low end torque for touring/riding around town.

I think the TW-6-6 would be just right for what I want.

Thanks to everyone in this thread.

Guess I would stick with the TW6-6 then.

Sorry, another dumb question. I'm new to cams and stuff. But who makes the R&R cam? Is there a website? Or do you sell them?

Thanks again.
I was refering to the 6, PM me your phone number and I'll have Reggie give you an in depth explaination. That is if your willing to go to gear drive, the RR525 comes in gear only.

I really didn't plan on going to a gear drive. I was trying to keep it as basic and inexpensive as possible at this point. If I do a 103" kit and heads then I'd consider gear drive and doing a complete job.

Thanks for the offer on the information.
