cam install list - is this everything?

I've decided I want to install Andrews 26 cams in my '03 fatboy. I'm going to be doing the work myself. I have yet to find a comprehensive list of what is needed so I want to know if the list I have is everything I need. I'm going to change the inner bearings to Torrington B-148s at the same time and also replace the cam chain tensioners. This list is assuming I'll have my indy press out the old cams/bearings and press in the new ones (can you use the oven method to remove the cams and bearings or is that only for installing them?). Here goes:

Parts:
17997-99A SE quick install pushrods
17045-99C HD cam installation kit
39954-99A Primary chain tensioner
39964-99A Secondary chain tensioner
11031 Tensioner retaining ring (2)
39965-99 Chain guide
17048-98 SE Exhaust gaskets
25938-00 Roller Bearing Spacers
LMR-002 Baisley spring
Andrews tw26a cams
Torrington B-148 bearings

George's Garage Tools:
Cam Tensioner Unloader TC88
Cam/Crank Gear Locking Tool TC88
Oil Pump Alignment Screws TC88
Inner Cam Bearing Remover/Installer TC88

Am I missing anything? Do I need to get any o-rings or anything else?

Man you did your home work didn't you.
I didn't see any gaskets other than exhaust.
Adjustable push rods are a huge expence for nothing in my opinion.
The 2 and 4 degree key is used in Gear Drive cams...you will have to get 2 or 4 degree advance gear and that would come from Bobby Wood.

Looks like you got all the bases covered....but there will always be something that will pop up it's ugly head in a build......:duh?:

Yes, gaskets. The cam cover gasket for sure. There are o-rings where the oil pump and cam plate connect to the cam chest oil channels, also between the oil pump and cam plate. Some folks re-use these, but it appears you are being thorough, so...

I think James sells a complete gasket kit for cam chest based on your model, a local indy should have it. Be careful, James throws all the o-rings in a little baggie in the kit and some of the rings are darn close but different.

There's also a guy who makes his own pump alignment pins, he's a machinist and posts here. Saves you a couple of bucks. Same pins align the tappet blocks. Do a search and you'll find him. Good luck!

I have some SE adjustable pushrods that i just took out of my Heritage. Have about 3000 miles on them but still in perfect condition. I've also got the covers that need to be used with the adjustables. I'll let the rods and covers go for $75. PM me if interested.

You will need to replace one of #11157, o-ring, crankshaft to oil pump. It does not come with the #17045-99C, cam service gasket kit.
I would also put in the #LMR-002 Baisley spring for 1999 & later Twin Cam A & B motors. (1-503-289-1251).
I just did my cam this week and the oil pump o-ring did come in the kit.

I also put in the Baisley spring too.

If you are going to snip off your pushrods and go with SE adjustables then I would not buy the cam kit. It comes with the rocker cover gaskets, breather assembly gaskets, tappet cover gaskets as well as bearings and other stuff you don't need.

The Andrews 26A cam I bought came with the bearings so I did not use the ones in my kit. I also purchased Torrington B148s locally, so I did not use the INA bearings in the kit.

Here is a parts list that will be needed: I also show what is in kit. The big items, like bearings, rocker gaskets and pushrod o-rings you do not need if you go the way you described:

Parts needed:
39965-99 Chain Guide
39954-99A Primary Chain Tensioner
39964-99A Secondary Chain Tensioner
11031 Retaining Ring (2) (included in kit)
11494 Retaining Ring for front cam (included in kit)
601 Roll Pin (for Baisley Pressure spring) (included in kit)
11298 O-ring viton (for support plate plug) (included in kit)
11286 O-ring (large one for oil pump) (included in kit)
11157 O-ring (oil pump housing) (included in kit)
11301 O-ring (2) for oil passage in chest (included in kit)
25244_99A Cam cover gasket (included in kit)
65324-83A Exhaust gasket (need 2) (included in kit)

If you are buying the SE adjustable kit, it includes the pushrod tubs, clips and new o-rings

If you decide to take off the tappet houseing then:
18635-99B lifter cover gasket (2)

Don't know which air clearner you are running, I'm using SE AC:
29583-01 Backplate Gasket (included in kit)
11292 O-ring (2) (included in kit)

As noted, I would also buy the baisley spring (002) version. It will help.

I used George's garage:
Tensioner tool for the tensioners. (Takes a 1 1/4" socket/wrench or large channel locks)
Oil pump alignment pins
Cam locking wedge

I purchased a rear cam bearing removal/installation tool from a machinist in WI. His tool worked great and it cost me $85.
TC '99-06 with .875" id inner bearing $85 ( plus $4 PayPal)
His email is beattygw@sbcglobal.net and his tool works extremely well and I got it in the mail in a few days. I liked his tool because you can see what's going on and when you install the bearings, you know when they are seated by sound and feel.

You can also rent the tools.

I also recommend assembly lube. It keeps your parts coated well. Once assembled, I ran the starter without sparkplugs to get the oil flowing.

You might want to consider using SE perfect pushrods instead of the adjustables. Taking off the fuel tank and rocker covers is not that big of deal. If you do this, you can then measure your rocker arm shaft play. Mine was more than I wanted so I simmed them and now it is very quiet. You will need to buy the pushrods, o-rings for the tubes and breather kit and rocker gaskets if you go this route.

I also replaced my lifters for AMS ones. not sure if that really did anything though. (I had 40,000 on my old lifters and replaced base on mileage)

The oven method worked great (I used 424 degrees) for me to removing and replacing the cams. I still had to press on the bearing on the front cam, though Andrews presses on the race for the rear cam bearing.

If you are changing the oil, remember to get the o-ring for the plug and perhaps an oil filter.

There's nothing worse than getting halfway through a job only to discover you forgot to order something and now can't ride for the next week. :crying:

I think the HD cam installation kit should have those covered.

I thought that may be the case but wasn't sure. That would add at least another $100 so I think I'll just skip it. From what I've read, I'll still be plenty happy with the result. I've removed the keys from my list.

Part # 25938-00.

Its a rear cam sprocket spacer kit. Contains 5 spacers. If you are using chain drive cams you will need to align the crank shaft sprocket and rear cam sprrocket.

Any time you change the geometry of the cams , like changing the inner cam bearings or the cam bearings or the cams you may need to realign the rear cam sprocket.

They are not in the cam installation kit.
Thanks, I added it to the list.

Just to make sure I'm understanding you correctly, when you say included in the kit, you're talking about the HD cam installation kit, right? If that's the case, I'll just go with the kit. I'll have extra parts and probably cost a little more, but I won't have to worry about missing anything.

Thanks! That saved me some cash. I emailed him and he responded right away. Put in an order and he said he'll ship it out first thing in the morning.

Yep, I had to decide if I wanted to pull the gas tank and the rocker covers. I've decided the extra money spent on the adjustables is saved in time spent on the install.

I've only got 14K on mine so I'm going to leave the stock lifters. If I ever decide to up the cubes (probably inevitable), I'll replace them at that time.

If you are changing the oil, remember to get the o-ring for the plug and perhaps an oil filter.
And I thought I was thorough.

:thanks:

Yes, it is included in the cam installation kit. There is extra stuff in the kit, like two set's of crappy INA bearings, one for the 2000-2005 cams and the others for 06-07. Roller and ball cam bearings. Breather kits and valve cover and tappet cover gaskets.

After getting this kit, there is no way I would pay for it again since I am not using over half of the stuff; which most likely represents more than 70% of the kit cost.

BTW, the oil and transmission plug o-ring is:11105

The thing that I failed to mentioned is the items that are not in the kit is what needs replacing in the first place....the crappy tensioners.
