Howdy,

I'm considering riding from Northern Virginia to Daytona for Biketober Fest. My parents "snowbird" in Orlando, so I'd have a place to stay. I figure two days down, two days of fun, and two days back.

I'm dreading the thought of riding I-95 the whole way. Can anyone suggest alternative routes?

TIA,

wyo

Hey Wyo, 95 is probably your best shot, but you might play around with one of the internet mappers such as Mapquest. See what they give you for the "Scenic" route. Have fun.

Straydog,

For me, the ride is maybe more important that the destination, within limits.
So far, I'm looking at riding the Blue Ridge Parkway through Virginia and N. Carolina.
450 miles, I'd bet on 12 hours at least.

I'll post my plans as the develop.

regards,

I'm in Durham, NC, andhave done Daytona many times... I usually blow down to Savannah, then take 17 to Jax....bypass around Jax, and pick up 13 (The River Road, aptly named) to Hwy 207 in hastings, then down to Palatka...then take Hwy 20 to US 1, stop at the Fireside Bar on 1 just south of I-95, and put up a tent...been some years I never went south of that!

Since I live in Jax I can tell you some good routes around hear. If you take Muthuh's route to Jax this is what I would do from here. The new brige on I-95 over the St Jhons is not done yet but its cool to ride now so you should get back on 95 go throu town over the Fuller Warren brige and get off south of town on to US-1 . There will be lots of bikes taking US-1 all the way to Daytona. If you take 295 (by-pass) you can get back on to US-17 into Palatka, a few miles south of there take SR 100, its now a realy nice wide 2 lane . Take it to US-1. Keep your plans posted and if you want some co. we usaly have two to 4 bikes going down in our group. Let me know.

Straydog or Muthuh,

I'm pretty much set on doing the entire Blue Ridge Parkway (from Front Royal VA into NC), 470 miles + 80 miles from home:

exit BRP at NC215 near Balsam Grove

NC215 south to jct US64 near Rosman NC

west on US64 to jct NC281 (NC281 becomes SC130 at the NC/SC border)

south on SC130 to jct SC11 near Salem SC

southwest on SC11 to jct SC24 near Oakway SC

SC24 to Anderson SC

SC 81 at Anderson SC south to McCormick SC

It looks like decision time; do I take...

SC28 from McCormick SC to Augusta, then blast through to Savannah ??

or
pop into GA on US378 and catch US1 and high tail it though GA to Jacksonville FL??

Please remember that the ride is more important than the destination.

Thanks for your advice.

blue ridge parkway is a beautiful ride and I highly recomend it, if you want to stop and see any of the sites you might want to plan on two days just for the parkway. Some of the roads into town to get gas are just as scenic, one that I took said no trucks or RV's, very twisty and fun scraped the floorboards numerous times( I think it was route 40?). bring your camera and have fun.

Excellent advice!

I have previously rode Skyline Drive from Front Royal to Waynesboro, VA. Posted speed limit is 35mph. Assuming the entire Blue Ridge Parkway is also 35 mph, it will probably take 2 days to do it right. Good thing is I have 3 weeks vacation built up so I will take your advice and leave a day earlier.

I appreciate your advice Alien, I hope that we cross paths so that I can buy you a beer (or your favorite beverage).

Regards,

Exiting at Hwy 215 prevents you from having to go northwest to it's end, but it's only, what? another 30-40 miles to be able to say you did the whole thing? Although between Asheville and Hwy 215 is, in my opinion, the best part of the parkway with a bunch of tunnels and great views, the rest of it into Cherokee, NC is as nice. Now - if you do go all that way, I have two other Parkways I'd suggest, but they slowly take you further away. One is at the end of the Parkway, turn right away from Cherokke (tourist trap, but nice Casino!) go over the Great Smokey National park Road to the other side, and head left (west) at Sugarloaf Visitor Center towards Cades Cove...man such a nice ride!
Either go all the way through Cades Cove, or before you get there, go northwest into Townsend and hit Hwy 321, which carries you maybe 6 miles to the Foothills Parkway. Take it southwest maybe 20 miles to Highway 129, turn left and buckle up your seat belt. Thats the famous Deal's Gap ride, over "The Dragon" 300 and sumpin hairpin turns in 11 miles. A little further down is the town of Robbinsville, and the little known but breathtaking Cherahalla Parkway west into TN at Tellico Plains. All this is only a couple hours riding. From Tellico Plains due south on Hwy 68 to Hwy 64 and you're nearly back on your track if you head east some.... if this is the only time you'll be visiting the Blue Ridge Area...take an extra day and do these rides... I know people in Savannah so I always enjoy it, but it's not my favorite destination for just riding the backroads... too congested. I have several mountain rides and maps posted in the Archives on my site, if you have time to wander through there. You may pick up some interesting roads to take.

Otherwise, if you stick to your plan - make sure to stop and enjoy Mabry Mill near Hwy 58 in VA, Mayberry Gen'l Store a few miles south of Hwy 58, there's a nice restaurant at Hwy 52 in Fancy Gap called The Mountaintop, another one where Hwy 18 crosses the BRP in Laurel Springs, another one called The Parkway where Hwy 70 crosses BRP east of Asheville, REALLY cool tunnels south of Asheville -

Also I may be wrong but I wouldn't count on Hwy 215 being paved if that makes a difference to you... Hwy 276 into Brevard is a nice paved road...tiny two-lane road...but a lot of those smaller roads off the BRP is gravel - be careful its a steep descent off the Pkwy. (If you take 276, stop at Looking Glass Falls - nice one.)

The speed limit is 45 on the parkway and in my opinion, better roads. Muthuh is also right, the first 30 -40 miles(or the last depending how you look at it)has some great tunnels cut through the mountains, the longest I believe is 1/4 mile long, and pretty impressive. I believe there is a website on the BRP, there are also lots of books that show some points of interest if you can find any before you leave. I hope the weather cooperates and have a safe and fun trip. I have video of clouds going past my bike on one of the lookout points on my last trip down the Parkway.

I recomen getting on 23 from the BRPW take it to Franklin take 441 . 441 is a great road all the way to Ocala if you like then 40 into Daytona. Even if you take 441 to south Ga them 82 to US1 and on down.
I took 441 all the way from Cornella Ga to Fargo Ga this summer, you'll love the old junk yards with 1942 Ford coupes laying around, not to mention the countryside.

When do they close the BRP?

They close it for the winter months but I'm not sure when they close it or if it's the same time each year.

Anybody know?

Jackson Hole isn't bad, right next door they have a bar with about 20-30 crappers as the bar stools, it's kinda funny.
Iron Horse is always cool. Just North of Iron Horse is the White Eagle, a little bar thats fun.
Then there's Main Street.
