Going to do my cams this winter and switching over to gear drives. The S&S kit comes with torrington for the inners and Nachi 6004 for the outer. Are these Nachi the best bearings to use or are there better ones out. Seem easy enough to switch them befiore they go in. Thanks

Why would you mess with success? Myself and a couple hundred on this forum run the S&S install kit with our gears, never heard of any issues with the S&S bearings.

I actually was not questioning the success of the kit really, was more wondering on the bearing since its a name i didn't reconize and i wanted to determine if S&S had switched bearings in the kit. Needed more of a clarifaction on that issue.

Although LAF has quite a valid point, I know it is not what you are after. In my line of work, bearings are cheap insurance, always go for the best.
Perhaps you will recognize some of the brands listed below - there are a lot of bearing cross reference sites online. I would be confident that the supplied bearing would be suitable and rated for the load it is subjected too.

Sorry not meaning to be a smart a$$. Just think one should not mess with success and proved components.

Let us know if you find better as I would certainly consider them.

Snowman, exactly what i was looking for. I agree with LAF on the compeonets working but like you stated bearings are cheap insurance.
The names i am most familar with are Timkin and SKF. I am wondering if anybody has switched away from the nachi bearing. I really just want to put the best bearing in the motor since the cams are so critcal.

Probably more important than the manufacturer of the cam bearing is the correct set up of the gear drive lash. I would not mess with S&S choice of bearings based on the sole ground that I am familiar with other brand names. Selecting the right bearing is a science and I always left it to the pros.
Moreover, S&S provides the Torrington B 148 as inner cam bearings, why would they settle on something below this standard for the outside bearings.

Hog, I agree but i wanted to clarify that S&S has been putting the nachi in the kits along and didn't make a recent switch . One other question- Does the intstruction explain how to adjust the gear lash so its with in specs? Have not cracked open the destrutions yet.

Go to www.woodcarbs.com and look for the instructions on gear cam installation. Better instruction for gear lash adjustment compared to S&S.

A search on gear lash will give some ideas, harleyhog's website does a pretty good job too
