Well The crank went out on my 95" (big surprise) 93hp 96tq :cya:

instead of playing around with that thing i decided to bite the bullet and get a S.E. 120R Crate engine:woohoo: it's looking like it was about to be time to replace the drive belt so my question is it worth converting it over to chain drive?
or will the Kevlar belt hold up to me thrashing it on daily?
I plan on installing a Barnett scorpion clutch to help keep it locked up. I know the up side to the chain is I should be able to run a wider rear tire after I burn this one off. I should have the engine in my hands within a week so any help would be nice.
thanks,

Hi Man

We have a 120" and a 127" that both get service in the '86 Fxr with Dead stock Clutches, tranny and rear Belt etc etc,,,, and the rigid frame with dead stock old-style 4-spd box and clutches but with rear Chain and 1.5" 8mm Kev primary belt..

The Fxr gets beat on often by "her" with whichever motor is in it,, but I beat on the rigid frame like a Sasquatch Love Doll with whichever motor.........
I have broken 2 Kev primary belts in 12 years,, "her" sickles components stand up no prob..
No probs with RK DragRace Chains or Tsubaki HQR chains..

Both run dead stock clutches etc with No Probs Locking up and burning hole-shots across 4 lane intersections..
Spending money on "super" clutch components is optional for some,,, Me,,, I'll never do it cuz I know dead stock stands up to My heavy hands..

Have a ball with that Big Motor,, I haven't run small for decades..

There is a guy in town with a 120 running a Kevlar belt and he hammers on it regularly. Last I talked with him he had yet to break a belt...burned up a couple rear tires but no belts...yet.
FMPOV, when a belt let's loose generally no harm no foul, can't say the same for chains since I have seen them do everything from just snap and fall to the ground to wrap up and destroy a primary cover so it's a crap shoot. Personally I would go with the belt.

If a Boss Hoss can use belt drive, I think you'll be OK. Just put a belt for a Buell 1125R (Goodyear) on my bike last Friday, but the OEM belt (Gates) was holding up fine.

Belt is light, quiet, clean, and super low maintenance.
Chain is easier to change gearing and stronger, but if it does fail it tends to tear up stuff.

Thanks

I think I'm going to stay with the belt. I was just thinking that if it was a issue the chain could be replaced with out taking the bike apart was my biggest concern. well thanks for the input.

They should develop a "monkey link" for belts, too...

70,000+ on my belt the last 15,000 with the 120r.
the chance of you ever hooking a stock tire 0n the street enough to break a belt, would be pure abuse . it is gonna slip street tires under every situation I have put my ultra through.
it took less skill to pull a wheelie on my bagger when it was 105/110:)
when you get em hooked and still abuse them is when you need a chain.
then you have to move to the next weak link.

it's funny when you think you replaced the last weak link it starts all over again.
seems like it never stops OCD MAYBE? Did it with a mustang until rode the trailer to the track only.not going to let this happen to the bike!

Went chain just because I DO race some and tour some too. Peace of mind.
You two need two chains each.
One for the final drive and one to put binders on ,to hold you in the seat.:redrolf:

When it comes to putting HP on the ground, I do not think I have ever seen a belt drive at the drag strip of top fuel bikes. Take it from the pros.
But with three times the HP a street Harley will be making, a slick on the back from a car to hook it up, and an 8 foot wheelie bar.

broke belt

I just know 99% of riders don't push there bike as hard as I do.
when I had my fxr I use to power-shift all the time when I raced around on it. the first time I did after really hopping the HP up I knocked teeth from the belt.
I was sure I took out the trans until I seen what happened then there is not a quick fix as I'm sure you know.

If you ride like i do get a chain. I broke my belt with my little 110 ft lbs tq motor. If you get a tire that will stick the belt will break if you dump the clutch around 4k rpm. If you only roll on the throttle then most belts will hold up to all the hp/tq you can make. It's the sudden jerk that breaks them.
