Ok. I have a 05 EG with FI. I have the Rineharts, an A. Ness Big Sucker intake and Dobeck/Techlusion FM. 10K miles of no problem, reliable riding. I ride mainly two-up.

Enter the 98" build. I'd like to go larger but don't wanna split the cases. I see I'm going to have to port the heads (using either B. Boyz or Deweys) and will pick up the kit from HDwrench. I see guys switching to the SERT. Is this an absolute?? Besides the head porting and the kit, is there anything else I need? Gaskets?? Special tools??

I'm new to wrenching on bikes but I mess with everything else so I ain't scared at taking a crack at this. Anything I need to watch for?? Anyone has a step by step type instructions?? The site has a lot of info but it's sort of scattered.

Having just finished the 98 build on my Road King, I can tell you that it isnt all that tuff. Just take your time and double check everything. Some things off the top of my head to watch out for include making sure the cam bearings go in with the printed side facing you, make sure you dont drop anything in the case when the cylinders come off, dont over torque the cam plate, oil pump and cam cover bolts, and make sure those same holes are clear of oil and other debris. I have seen pictures of cracked cases from over torqueing those bolts. It aint pretty. Dont be afraid to ask questions. I asked a million stupid questions on this board and from HDWRENCH. I figured I would rather ask questions than screw something up. Bike runs pretty well, started first try.

oh MY MY That is one of the thing you get when you buy the kit. FREE tech support at any stage. I am there , pick up the phone and call I will walk you through what ever point you are at. Just a phone call away. As well as I send several sheets on break in, pictures with tq , for rockers, cam, and heads. Heck if I can connect the dots any one can!!!!!!!! On another note, I am making DVD's that will cover a 98 inch build. . I have a bike coming for the build and plan on tapping it. Not sure how I will handle the dvd thing. Most likely it will be a small charge when a sell a build. Should work well for most, as the small dvd/tv combos would work well in a shop, not to mention what else you could watch in the shop :brows:

If you're talking about doing a DVD, it will definately help people that are apprehensive about doing it themselves, more comfortable. Not sure about something, you just check it out again. Good idea and good luck with it.

When it comes time to do my build, it will be worth the small price of admission. By now, you should have a good idea where the stumbling points are for us novices. Focus on these areas in great detail and you will save yourself HOURS on the phone. Its a win/win.

If you want my honest opinion re the DVD, while they not all are the same, someone else has a "engine building video" out, done by a professional video company, and I have seen it.

From the point of view of someone doing a engine build this thing is virtually useless, I think a dedicated image intensive webpage much like HH has re building his own top end, without some of the extraneous comments, would be far more useful to a fella doing the actual work rather then watching a movie for entertainment purposes.
I also know that HH is doing the bottom end of his engine, so he should have a decent pictorial on that part also soon.

And it is totally free.

I think the concept will work well as you have outlined, as it will give the newbies a visual on workbench layout for placing the various component groups as they come off the bike.

I even thought about getting a set of plastic trays made purpose built, like the pros use, for say top end tear down, piston and cylinder tear down, cam change out, bottom end rebuild, etc. etc.

Naturally you will show all the "tricks of the trade" like the paper clip and rubber band system used to assist in adjusting the pushrods etc., proper use of the various tools, etc.

Gonna get the kids screaming about their DVD player and 12" tv dirty when their dads start doing the re runs ha!
