First take off the cable at the handlegrip end. If the clutch lever works ok unattached, then you know it's not the lever. If the clutch lever is binding, get a new one.

If its still very tight, either the cable is frayed (internally) and causing it to bind, preventing it from engaging/disengaging OR the clutch release mechanism in the primary cover is binding. In either case, the cover has to come off. Hopefully, it's only a clutch cable which can be replaced for just a few dollars ($35-$60). If not, it is either clutch assembly itself or the ramp/ball setup inside the Primary cover.

Good luck, Wes.
