Hello all, I just bought a 1976 Shovel. I do not know very much about bikes. I am posting pictures of it. If anyone can tell me anything about it, I would appreciate it. I do not know what is after market, and what is not. Any help on that would be appreciated.

Now for the main problem, it is leaking a lot of oil out of the muffler attached to the rear head. It is leaking both from where the header connects to the head and from the muffler itself. Oil is literally spraying out of it like a spray gun. What would cause it to do this? I know that taking it to the shop would be the right answer, but I have to get it going on a very limited budget. I am leaving the military soon and have to save up money for when I get out. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I will get a signature posted soon.

Without getting hands on sure sounds like valve guides are shot and maybe drainback holes are plugged.Pull the rear plug and you should find a real mess in there as well.If you want to dig a little after you have run the motor, shut it off and pull the push rod cover clips off lift the cover from tappet block if oil flows out that's part of your problem.Good luck to you in the military.

Like was said, possibly a worn valve guide or the gasket around the oil return from the cylinder head to the lower case is bad and you are sucking oil into the top end. The only way you will know for sure is to pull the rear cylinder head with rocker box attached and check it out. We can walk you thru it but you really need a service manual. I would also suggest a parts manual, it gives you a breakdown of everything.
