Top 10 Overlooked Maintenance Items

Quote:
Perhaps the motorcycle manufacturers are to blame. They’ve made their products so reliable that we take them for granted. We almost feel that if we just keep our bike’s tank full and spoon new rubber on the rims when necessary, we’ve got our machinery handled. Well, that’s not quite true, and consequently, many riders tend to overlook basic maintenance for extended periods. While lots of riders have the off-season in which they have the time away from riding to take care of annual upkeep, many little things need to be done on a regular basis throughout the riding season.

Why do I click on such obvious "click bait"? Ten things? I call BS. #1 "Lubricant" and then four more variations of lubrication. Oh and coolant, hydraulic fluids, tire pressure, break pads and oh so important (if you don't really ride you bike I guess) fuel treatments.

I get bikes in all the time with the "I do my own maintenance" when what they really mean is "I change the engine oil every once in a while". Not clicking on the clickbait (I am highly skeptical of "top ten" lists on the internet now) but the general point is valid. Steering head bearings, fork oil, wheel bearings, cable lubrication, clutch adjustment, fasteners, etc generally get completely ignored.

Latest example, I just had a bike in that didn't appear to have had the wheel bearings repacked since it was new. Brand new tires though. Apparently he takes it to a "tires only" shop that didn't bother (or didn't know enough) to look at the wheel bearings and suggest that they be cleaned, inspected, and repacked.
