I find great humor in the phrase. "Harley quality going downhill", lol... harley quality,, is just enough to get through the warranty period,, without failing.. after over 40 years in the harley repair and service industry...
harley used to make a bike meant to last a lifetime,, and be serviced and repaired for that period,,, now, obsolence looms at 10 years from manufacfure... .

Yep... and wait until the tech features start getting tiny amounts of corrosion here and there on connectors, sensors and computer components -- and they start throwing codes...

absolutely true FXDRYDR,,, these "high tech" features will be the downfall of many of these $30k plus bikes. lol

I ride to ride,, I dont want or need entertainment,, i ride for the sheer joy of riding,,, the exhaust, the wind, sights and smells of the freedom,,, if you do need it,,, on the back of a bike, traveling at least 44 fps at 30 mph,, I believe you will become a statistic one day while playing with the toys..

Same with cars and trucks... electronics and metal will fail even more quickly here in the NE where salt is used in the winter.

It's a "throw away" world now.

Planned obsolescence.

Make a product that lasts indefinitely and the remaining market gets mighty small.

''Built to last a lifetime!'' some old ads would say. Used to be someone bought a Harley and rode it till one of them died. Was a point of pride.
Now it seems to be more important to have the newest and most expensive Harley in the gated community.

Used to be if ya rode a motorcycle , ya needed at least a little bit of mechanical know-how. Mechanics have become 'technicians' , with more computer skills than wrench twirling.

I can buy points , plugs , condenser and wires for my '44 , '50 , '55 , '68 at the local NAPA , but not a Harley dealership.

Can't even get parts and service for a 90's Evo at many dealerships.

I think allot of harley guys overlook the quality of the old rice bikes. One of the most fun bikes I ever owned was a 1980 kawasaki Z1R1000. Eventually it was upgraded to a 1200cc drag bike motor. Definitely started my craving for speed and power. It was a great bike but ruined me for longing for more power on every bike I owned since. When I started my FXR project I took some key things about that bike and designed them into my new build. It was ludicrously fast and did everything that was asked of it. Always regreted selling it. It started and ran like an animal everytime I touched it for years was a great quality bike. Today's bikes including harley just aren't built like that anymore. Allot of truth to the previos poster who said they are designed to get you through the warranty....

The only thing I ever saw kill one of the old metrics was lack of care and even then I saw some pretty ragged ones that just kept running. Most often, like anything else, was leaving gas sit in the tank for a year or someone jacking around with tuning multi-carb bikes that didn't know what they were doing. Otherwise the things just kept running. I don't even remember all the metric bikes I've had but what I do know is every one of them was sold in running condition. None of them though, including the new ones, would stand up to Harley in fit and finish in my opinion. Stamped steel levers, brushed aluminum switch housings with coatings that yellow and flake and costume jewelry looking chrome pieces are but a few things I don't like from an appearance point of view with most of the metrics.

arcangel,,, I had the same experience,,, back in the drag racing days,,, I got really pissed at harley,,, the company,,, so,, in 1980,,, we had already switched from twin engine nitro burning harley drag bikes to kaws,,, I bought an 80 KZ1000LTD,,, the owner of the Kawasaki dealer was a top fuel racer himself,,, so,,,built the engine, 2mm over bore,, at 13-1 comp,, Andr and went through the chassis,,, the bike was ridiculously fast and quick as well,,, 100% stone cold reliable,,, and including the $2800 I paid for it new,, I only had about $6k in the whole thing. including the candy pearl paint job..
then I bought the 82 fxrs new... since I already had years of harley experience.

Nice... Yah those old kawis were absolute beasts. Never could get to 200mph but just short, she had no more to give. But damn what a ride those bikes were. Well at least till you let off and had to deal with some frightening speed wobble on the way back down.... Lol

78 CB750K...rode the crap out of it between HD's and sold it last year for twice what I had into it. It was reliable as a rock and never failed with over 136,000 miles on it. As for "lasting a lifetime" that's why I have and Evo...
