Riding over metal grates

Any advice about riding over metal grates? Bridge is in under construction, I freaked out when I get the metal grates. I am glad I made it safely across, but I am worried about going back over them.

Relax and just ride across. We have draw brides with grates. Felt like ice my first time.

I'm just here for the beer.

Yup--just don't tense up. The bike will have no problem with it--its just feels disconcerting at first, but nothing will happen other than what feels like a wee shifting of wee little lanes--which it kinda is.
A little momentum might help you feel better.

Thanks for the advice. When I get nervous, I usually have songs pop in my head. All I could think was "you picked a fine time to leave me Lucille song", except my version went like this" you picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel", because that is what it felt like, that my front wheel was loose.

I noticed that AZ or NM members don't have a comment about grated bridges.lol.

Just don't tense up on the grips and you will float to the other side.

Give lots of distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. Do not slam on the brakes and don't grab a lot of throttle. Stay in the grove you are in. It's the same with ice on the bridges in the winter. With ice I pull in the clutch and coast unless the bridge is too long.

Seems like the anxiety is worse than the grates. You'll be fine. Maybe ride over it a few times just to get the feel of the bike. The more you do it the more comfortable you'll be.

We have entire bridge surfaces built of the grate material,,, try that at 35mph for 3/4 mile,, or more...lol,, it feels like the front is sliding one way and the rear the other for the whole trip,,, the only thing going through my mind is hitting that cheese grater surface at 50 feet per second. And being stripped to the bone....

It sounds like you have listened to Ben Colder at some point.

Those grates can be a little nerve racking, especially when wet. Maintain a steady speed and course and you will be fine. Go easy on braking or accelerating when wet. If you have time, take a detour and enjoy the ride.
