Coil Question

We have a 2002 XL1200C Sportster and recently it sounded like it was running out of gas, so it was switched to reserve and still had the problem. It was then pulled into a station and 2 gallons of 93 octane were put in the tank. Started the engine and still had the problem. Rode about a mile and it still sounds like it is running on one cylinder, pops, sputters etc., but only when you twist the throttle. The engine starts and idles fine, but will not run well at a higher RPM than idle. We have replaced the spark plugs and plug wires with new HD OEM parts. Do you think that the coil is weak and causing the problem?

Does it spit back through the carb. ? Sucking air maybe ? I had a azz of problems that seemed electrical but turned out to be old intake seals and bent intake flanges. All started from a hot crank after a (Pepsi) stop. Can you borrow a coil and try it...

I don't think that it is an intake leak, it started all of the sudden, and the intake appears to be ok. I will probably check with WD-40, before I am finished.

I don't have access to a used coil. A new one is ~$33. I may just put one on. I know that you can check the coil, but I don't have the book for this bike. If anyone has the test information, please feel free to let me know the particulars.

You all will be pleased to hear that I got the Sportster fixed last night, I hope. We installed the new coil and it seems to run fine. We did a test ride, between rain storms, and it runs well.

One thing that we did observe: If you put your hand anywhere near the new SE coil, with it's 40k volt output, you will get shocked. I guess high energy is a good thing in coils!

Thanks to All, for your help and suggestions!

Regards;

Lex

Edited to add: I should have said that you get the shock if you touch the electrodes, not the plastic encased coils. At any rate the new coil works great and has a bright blue spark. The old one had a orange spark.

are you talking about where the primary wires hook up ?
if they are exposed ,you will feel the pulse ..suggest you cover them with "boots, or liquid insulation..
(will help in the rain , or after washing the bike )
