Question upper rear shock mount 54309-87

anyone know which year this is off?

...and how did it actually mount to a bike?

One end appears to have a nut machined onto a smooth stud,
and the other end has a 30mm deep thread (which I presume a bolt goes into from the INSIDE edge of the fender? through the rail

curious to know how you where supposed to get a shock off, if you had to remove the inside fender bolt (or was there a threaded stud on the frame rail?)

Racepres is reading this now saying WTF is this?
^^ I'm gonna venture, those are the Shock mount [stud] used after the Strut [shock angle] change..
as I recall... you need to at least hold the Inner Fastener..

ahhhh do you now! thanks

and do they bolt like I said from the INSIDE?
so if you wanted to remove the shock you'd have to get up over the wheel to release the mounting bolt? (I guess you'd turn the machined nut while holding the fender bolt still)

trying to figure out if I can adapt this to replace my temp fix that I have on a busted stud

Thet push into the shock from the outside and have a bolt on the inner fender fasten them together. But I reversed the bolt so the sleeve is pushed through the inside to mount my sportie bags

The MoCo moved the top of the shock forward for appearance I guess...The Original FXR had the shocks more Vertical than the Later [I forget what year] Ones. Personally I feel the Handling was compromised in doing that... You can spot the Early ones easily by the Early style fender Strut.

Can you relocate the shock to the original mounting point, on the later frames, and use the earlier strut covers?

I hope so. I've got an early fender in my shop. Just waiting on Racepres to get me my early struts.

Sent from here to there.

If I remember right,on my 84 there is a light on the frame there. Should not need a new fender . There is a gap between the fender and the lug. May have to pull the fender to install it.
But you would definitely need the newer style strut.

I think people move them for eye appeal. I think the newer ones flow with the frame better.
But the angle change would help with sporty/fxr slanted bags fitting better.
I got a set here that would fit good if I had more angle on the shock.
