vindex1963 is reading this now saying WTF is this?
Here are the oil reports from George Douglas.
Thanks.

Hopefully George will chime in and tell us what they mean.
I understand the Blackstone report because I'm familiar with
the way they report.

These reports back up the 10,000 miles oil change recommendation that Amsoil makes. The one report using the syn 3 at 5,000 miles is pretty good also even though it's viscosity thinned out to a 40 weight.

gdkenoyer wants to know where he is and how he got here
Vindex/George,
Nice low numbers on your wear metals and still a good pile of 'cleaning' elements left. `Specially for 9k.

....tho the Blackstone average for Moly makes you go 'huh'? -- 'universal' must be MC engines not strictly HD VTwin engines...

2 questions:
1) were all 9k miles in one season, or did this go over a winter storage?
2) is there a TBN in there somewhere? I see it blank on the Blackstone, but can't quite make out the other report...

I posted these for George. They aren't from my bike.

Blackstone does not test for TBN unless you pay an extra fee. The one report from PPM shows TAN instead of TBN, which is another way to determine how the acid fighting additives are doing their job. This lab did not routinely test for TBN until I requested them to start testing for it instead of TAN.

Blackstone reports concerning their universal averages is a bit misleading if one does not underatand that these are for oils that typically have 3,000 miles of use on them. When you look at the wear metal totals at nearly 10,000 miles you have to do the math to understand that the Amsoil samples only had about 30% wear when compared to their universal averages. All wear metals are in parts per million and they keep growing in numbers throughout the oils service life.

Both bikes used this oil for only one year and one of them is from one of my florida customers that rode it out to sturgis and back. Let me know if you have more questions.

OK, OK, Typos suck. so what?

RULER is a high tech voltametric instrument. 400 microliters in a solvent and run the program. It looks at Amines and Phenols in the oil. Gives a good indication of remaining oxidative life.

The old standard for oxidation is RPVOT, expensive. On the order of 250 to 300 dollars.

RULER costs 25k for the machine, and a few dollars a test.

A good way to get a handle on remaining lfe of the oil. Some labs will run it for a small fee and report the values.

Vindex, I am a little surprised that we aren't getting a little more questioning on these reports. where did the nay sayers go concerning using oil this long and have 60% less wear than what typically occurs?

You're right George.

I notice all the people that go by the way it looks have gone away also. I've never been able to look at oil and see wear, breakdown, contaminates. The posted tests puts up fact instead of "that's what I've always done".

Well, I had every intention of collecting a sample a couple of days ago when I did the 10k service on the Limited. Unfortunately, I remembered just after I'd drained the transmission into the same pan. I'm leaving for Arkansas and Oklahoma tomorrow morning, so I should have another 5,000 miles worth of riding done over the next 2 weeks or so. I've got a note on the workbench to get a sample of the oil, and I'll be sending it in as soon as I get it.

And if you're looking for something to discuss and/or argue about until then, this is a 2010 FLHTK with a TTS, a Fat Cat, and a Ventilator a/c running Amsoil 20W-50. I switched to the Amsoil at the 1k service, ran 10W-40 over the winter, back to 20W-50 at 5k in the spring.

When you get ready to take that sample give me a call and I will ordrer the kit from polaris labs for you. Amsoil uses them and they are one of the few certified labs in the country.

No they are not. When using them don't put too much faith into their recommendations. I can point out on several samples in the past where their recommendations of what oil to use for example or viscosity was way off base per OEM specs for the concerned vehicles. These inaccuracies have been brought to their attention and are being corrected. There was no problems with the actual reports of data, just their comments were out in left field somewhere.

Oil Analyzers Report

What does it all mean? They don't compare it to anything or say what range it should be in.

2009 FLHX 9,500 miles
8,500 on Amsoil 20w-50
HD aftermarket oil cooler.
Thanks,
Corey
